I have a dear Serbian friend who is not well and I would love to get her some great Serbian comfort food to lift her spirits. Does anyone know any good Serbian spots that are 1. very good and 2. very authentic? Is there anything off the beat and path in the northeast?

You might try Balkan Express at 23rd and Kater. Not completely serbian, more eastern European with influences from Serbia, Hungary etc.

I checked them out but they seem to get slighted by any Balkans that commented on it. My friend is super particular so I am looking for the real deal.

I don't know if you are willing to drive 1 3/4 hours to the Big Apple. I think you might be better served to find the real deal there.
        Try the Manhattan board.

The only other place I am aware of, and it is Serbian cooking is in Kensington. Jovan's place. Its basically a bar with standard bar food and a smattering of Serbian entrees.

With the wide range of different national influence on Serbian cuisine; it seem being specific as to what she deems authentic would be the only way to assure her satisfaction. Hungarian, Greek, Austrian, Mediterranean, Turkish all significantly influence Serbian foods. All which can be found in good form in Philadelphia but most likely not in the same place.
