Opened hummus - how long does it last in the refrigerator?

fldhkybnva Oct 10, 2013 05:17 PM

While most hummus does not last long in this house, there are a few varieties I enjoy which only come in a particular size. I usually use the smell/taste test and it seems to last a good long while opened in the refrigerator but thought I'd get another opinion on how long until you toss it?

We get that humongo tub of Sabra at Costco sometimes. Stays perfectly good for at least 3 weeks.

I get the giant tub of plain hummus from Trader Joe's and it lasts 2-3 weeks opened until I eat it all, so I can't say if it would have lasted longer or not. I've noticed the difference in expiration dates to be as much as 10 days off from the front of the display to the back, so I always do the annoying-to-TJ's reshuffling of product when I choose one. Always go to the back like your mom taught you!

I am also a product shuffler, mostly with eggs and packaged veggies, never thought to do it with hummus, thanks for the tip. I usually eat hummus as a snack and the giant tubs from Trader Joe's potentially last a while in our house of 2.

I also have kept hummus for several weeks and noticed no change. And I am fastidious about checking dates on all perishables. I generally grab from the back of the shelf because any good store rotates the stock.

I am more paranoid than most and will throw out hummus that's been opened after 7-10 days. But then again, i live alone and do some serious double-dipping ;)!
I have actually frozen hummus before, and just let it thaw in the fridge.
Maybe buy the big one and take out the portion for eating in the next week or so and freeze the rest.....

Unlike others, I find that mine doesn't last much longer than 8 - 10 days once it's opened. Sometimes pink or green mold grows on the surface or the lid so I know it's turned. Other times I find it looks fine but has developed an unpleasant fermented taste.

This household is notorious for random hummus dips, I wonder if that has any influence

I find store bought last longer & stays fresher than homemade. Do you find that?

I buy the smallest tub available and the freshest. It only lasts a couple of days before we have finished it.

Since nearly all storebought hummus has some kind of preservative or processing to extend shelflife it does last longer than homemade. But then again when i have homemade hummus its often devoured within two days or so.....

Glad to hear it's not just a fluke. When I make homemade I make it with the intention of using it all up otherwise I go brand.

I had some that was unopened in the frig for about a week and a half. It had plenty of time until it expired, but when I went to use it, it was moldy.

Eek, that's no fun and sounds like perhaps it was moldy to begin with or something else was wrong.

Weird. I was just coming back to post that the exact same thing happened to me yesterday. Unopened container that i bought a few weeks ago, with an expiration date of 11/18/13. Covered in green spots. Yuck. I'd return it except I don't have the receipt and I don't remember which store it came from.

Blargh, that's unfortunate. When I go to grab the hummus, I NEED hummus, I'd be pretty bummed.

I notice a change in taste within a week of opening. It doesn't go moldy or anything; there's just a sort of stale smell to it. I've always wondered whether it was actually going off, or my palate just suffers from hummus fatigue after I eat it for a few days.
