Santa Monica Favorites by a hood.Rat

Bonus: Mariscos Guillen La Playita - 3306 Lincoln. $ (why, it's the real deal for a buck and a quarter.

Main: Sunday Farmer's Market - you'll smell it. $ (why, you can smell the ocean, pot, farm fresh local food and good chefs cookin it up, with simple music and fun. Grab a seat on the grass and feast on whatever you please.

Downtown: Tar and Roses - 602 Santa Monica. $$$ (why, because they flavor with the type of wood and tell you...and you'd think it would top out, but it just keeps getting better.

Northeast SM: O'Brien's - 2226 Wilshire. $$ (why, fish & chips, split pea soup, great beer selection, willy, sports, atmosphere...)

Wilshire / Montana: Father's Office - 1018 Montana. $$ (why, because they care about their food. Great Salads, Soft-shell crab, burger and the heinz catsup is plentiful.

North of Montana: 1631 Montana. $$ (why, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, cupcakes, cookies, cupcakes, pies, tarts, fresh loaves of bread and pretty damn good coffee.

SM Canyon: Hungry Cat: 100 West Channel Rd. (why, because I can go early, take my kid and eat cheap oyster while she has plenty of room to run. Sam's or G. Baldi would probably win over, but I have not been yet.

  1. North of Montana - isn't that Sweet Lady Jane? (Or did they change the name?)

Coffee - Caffe Luxxe! (on Montana).

Yes. I thought I had added the name. Thanks, maybe you could tell from the plethora of goodies.

Coffee at Luxxe is Great, I've become a real cheerleader for Spazio Coffee also.

I hit Caffe Luxxe this past weekend for the first time while shopping for a gift on Montana. Had a dark chocolate and espresso shakerato and thought it was wonderful! And Sweet Lady Jane IS the place referenced. It's at 1631 Montana. A couple months ago I was on Montana with my kids and my 12-year old son, who is going through an apple-pie craving phase, asked if we could pick up a pie somewhere. I said sure, and saw SLJ right by us and saw that they had whole pies for sale and asked for one. $55.00 later he had his pie. And I said, next time we are going to Trader Joe's, getting their quite good frozen crust and making our own not quite from scratch. That $55.00 is coming out of his share of the will. But the pie was very good.

The pies *are* good....especially the berry but I wish they'd strained the majority of the huge seeds out of the last one I purchased a few weeks ago.

          1. re: Wayno

Yea, $55 for an apple pie...... Ouch!

        2. Sweet Lady Janes is a rip off, and I've worked with her when I worked with a caterer, they are nasty people, to the customers & employees, fwiw.

I don't find anything at Hungry Cat cheap, and believe me, you won't either at GB, trust me.

...and the (non) sweet lady Jane is fired. Replacement to be determined, I have liked the lil' hidden patio on the north side of Montana around 11th

Oysters at happy hour seems priced ok for SM canyon. I trust you - cheap is relative word I guess, better to just write the price. It took a bit of pondering to come up with something good at the canyon.

LOL, I hear ya, just giving ya some shit....!

            2. re: Dirtywextraolives

SLJ, herself, wasn't very friendly to me when I had a job interview for an apprentice cake decorator. I guess my portfolio was too advanced for her pedestrian design. LOL

            3. No sure which Father's Office you went to but I've never seen Heinz yet alone any ketchup - in fact they are quite militant about no ketchup.

His sarcasm was flowing like (much faster than ketchup could possibly achieve) water...

I figured but hit send before I could say, unless you are being sarcastic!
