Are You Snacking On Anything Right Now? Part Deux!!

I went on and on about the chocolate pudding cake upon which I am currently hovering. As I suspected, #2 son killed the charger in my whipped cream, and so I shall have to do without. :( Brat.
Anyhoo, it would appear that us 'hounds love to snack. LOVE to snack. From Kombu chips to Curty Wurty pops (thanks for the education on those, suzigirl!!) to leftover fried dill pickles, we have an awesome commonality: loving to snack and loving to write.
So, let's do it again!!

  1. Having been up since 3 a.m, breakfast happened at 6:30, so this definitely qualifies as a snack: sliced rare leftover steak that I salted and am currently eating with my fingers. Gawd, Bad-mannered, but delicious. Accompanied by a Pepsi w/ crushed ice, de riguer every.single.day.of.my.life. :)

    1. Roasted seaweed snacks - I always feel odd indulging in seaweed but it's so addicting

Oh, yum. Love those things, but I usually don't care much for seaweed, though I do enjoy sprinkling kombu and gomasio on my noodle bowls. :) I bet it's the umami that keeps you coming back for more. I'm like that too; given the choice between sweet and savory, I'll take the savory ANYtime.
I dipped into last night's chocy pudding cake just now, but I only took two bites. And now it's off to the grocery. Have a wonderful day, everybody!! And tell us what you're snacking on right now!!

        1. re: mamachef

Well I'm an umami-glutton so that would make sense. I'm convinced that I have 90% glutamate receptors.

          1. re: fldhkybnva

I probably need to satisfy my cravings with seaweed snacks and not Burker King! And I do have some nice salty wakame crisps in the cupboard. Maybe this will help me get over my junk food bender. I feel awful after eating crap for two days . . . and I have a stomach of iron, most of the time.

            1. re: MrsPatmore

Seaweed snacks are addicting! The trader joes roasted are good but I'm hooked on the seasnax toasted onion.

Hope you feel better. I'm like ghat at the holidays. I can indulge with the best of them for about 4 days and then I'm ready to go to my usual.

              1. re: fldhkybnva

I'll look at Fresh Market to see if they have "seasnax". We don't have a TJ's or Whole Foods or anything decent around here. :(

I don't usually believe in this sort of thing, but I really feel like I need to do a juice-fast! LOL I've been really, really bad. I'm thankful that my snacking buddies here on my favorite CH thread don't judge.

                1. re: MrsPatmore

I've seen them only at wegmans and whole foods but be on the lookout, I'm sure they are elsewhwre

                  1. re: MrsPatmore

Abslolutely no judgement on this thread.

                    1. re: suzigirl

Thank goodness. I just ate 12 oz. salted pistachios. I'd hoped the shells would slow me down. Well, um, they did. But only a wee bit. Apparently, I'm an unstoppable, carbohydrate, sodium machine.

                      1. re: MrsPatmore

Before i got gastroparesis I would have put your butt to shame. I miss pigging out like a rock star.

                        1. re: suzigirl

I'm hoping my pig out soul returns next week. It's been hiding for 3 years now, just can't pack it away any more but now that my appetite is crawling back maybe I can enjoy the upcoming feast enough to serve 20 but only feeding a party of 2.

I must admit I can still eat a bit but the tummy issues have taught me to pig out on the good stuff, don't waste precious stomach room on food that's not really thaaatt good.

                      2. re: suzigirl

Hell no. No Judy Judgertons need apply. :)

          2. Goat cheese and kalamata olives on wheat toast. I wanted cream cheese and pimento-stuffed green olives on white, but had to improvise based on what was in the fridge. PS Thank you, mamachef, for starting a new thread!

Nummy snack, MrsPatmore! And it was my pleasure to start the new thread - that old one was freakin' ridiculous.

              1. re: mamachef

                It was freakin' ridiculously awesome!

                1. re: fldhkybnva

<was suprised and happy that it took off like it did. :)

            2. Pizza-flavored Goldfish, which seemed like a good idea at the time when I spotted the bag on the shelf. I'm also eyeing the jar of anchovies.

              1. I am beyond jealous. I can no longer get my beloved Curty Wurty pops. It is sad. Have one for me. Which flavors have you tried?

I fell in love with the peach cream, ma'am. Haven't even bothered to try another kind. Eventually I will, because that's how I roll - I fall in love with a product and go into full saturation mode, and then one day I wake up and decide to try something else. :) Like, I've changed favorite candy bars yearly since college.

                  1. re: mamachef

                    They are addictive.

                    What an outrage. Wha' happen?

                    1. re: mamachef

My pusher(ice ceeam man) can't get them from the distributor in Tampa. I miss them.

                      1. re: suzigirl

He should be flogged. I'll eat a nice creammyummypeachyswirlydelicioustastythanksforturningmeontothemone for you. In your honor. And say a silent prayer, and...
Actually what will happen is: I'll forget all about your poor deprived self :) and wolf one down and marvel at how yummy it is.
                        :)

                        1. re: mamachef

Man I miss those lovely little buggers. Who doesn't like peaches and cream popcicles?

Baaaaaaad people who don't deserve them anyway, that's who. You should write them a letter. ((poor suzigirlxoxox))

                  3. Four slices of bacon and a campari tomato with rwv, salt and pepper. Oink. Or should I say duck.. duck... PIG?

                    1. re: suzigirl

Hmm, my snacks are usually non-traditional given my daily carb saturation limits, but this is a super snack right up my alley.

                      1. re: fldhkybnva

It was good. It was the thick cut Amish bacon.

                      2. re: suzigirl

Awesome snack!! That doesn't sound piggish at all!! C'mon, you're acting like you ate pounds of bacon!!
Dr. Atkins would approve mightily, I'm sure.

                      3. "Field Trip" Beef Jerky, amazingly good!

                        1. Tilapia with broccoli on the side and some kasha cereal to nibble on. No it does not sound that appetizing but I must say that it worked wonders on my energy slump!

                          1. A can of sardines with hot sauce. My office mates are gonna love me. :) But I'm hungry and working til 10, and the only other food option is donuts, so, hello fishies. Will dispose of can neatly and out-of-doors.

You know, I am all over the map depending on my budget. I really like King Oscar but at the moment, I'm eating Goya, and having a blast, too. Like you, much love for the fishies.

                            2. rice crackers and wasabi peas....

                              1. Cucumber slices with smoked salt, glass of chilled reisling waiting for my dinner (sweet potato/black bean chili) to finish cooking....

                                1. Oh. Okay. Some Udi's chia/millet bread, toasted, with TJ's kale/spinach/yogurt dip spead on, some slivered up pieces of Lebanon bologna, and a chopped up topping of my hub's pickled pearl onions and carrots from the garden (by way of a Thomas Keller recipe). It's really tasty. I want another.

                                  1. Belize slaw!!!! Suzigirl, you rock! Do I even eat real food anymore? I blame the snacking madness today on the piles of egg whites I decided would be a good idea for breakfast and dinner :) It was likely strategic - more room for snacks!!

Nursing a sore throat so swallowing is rough. Only things that go dwn easily are very cold, soft things.so working on a tall glass of orange gatorade over lots of ice and nibbling a corn thin which is like a thin rice cake but made of corn. There's a cup of applesauce waiting, and, my oh my, the kosher store near my hotel sells something called a 'cheese snack' which the package bills asca crustless cheesecake. But its more creamy and light. Mmmm...gotta get me another!

I know, that cr@p is going around.
I'm in my second week of a cold or flu or sinus infection myself, it's awful.

                                    2. No, not snacking right now but wishing I was!

                                      1. Mango sorbet. Mmmmm, yum.

                                                1. Noshing on cracklings. No shame in my game. I'm making gehatke leiber, and I MUST make it with schmaltz. Therefore, I'm rendering chicken skin. My butcher saves it for me and doesn't charge me a dime for it, whoooot! And when ALL the fat is rendered out, poor me is left with the crispiest, most flavorful cracklings you've ever tasted, and actually they're so damn good that I'm thinking of crushing them and dusting them over popcorn. That is, if I have an appetite after the chopped liver that I'm making the schmaltz for. ;) Shabbat Shalom, y'all.

                                                        2. I am really getting into this single lady thing while SO is away regressing to my late nights in college filled with the most random snacks - tonight's surprise snack wonder - leftover baked chicken mixed with Fage Greek yogurt, black forest bacon, diced tomato all wrapped in a Romaine heart and sprinkled with "onion crunch." It is quite the mystery why on earth I bought this "onion crunch" which was sitting in a corner on the very bottom shelf of some obscure aisle but it's delicious!

                                                          1. strawberry yogurt and a slice of caramel apple swirl bread with the new Philadelphia cream cheese with 2x the protein honey flavor. hmm this sounds more like a breakfast then a snack...

Excited to spend time with her, be with family, get in the visiting we've all been missing. And yes indeed, snacking: in my very near future I predict: wild rice soup, cheese curds, poutine, and leftover brisket. And whatever else I make. :) Grandma taught me to love cooking and baking, and I'll be forever grateful to her for not teaching me to view it as a chore. I can't hardly wait. :)

I was forced into midnight dinner two nights in a row while the bf did inventory at work. Two 18 hr days in a row. Man, I am envious. I get tired just hearing about it.

                                                                                                                    2. Matzo w/ butter and salt, and a wild cherry Pepsi w/ crushed ice. Plebeian and delicious. Happy Weekend, y'all.

And I'm so happy about it! I got up especially early in order to take an American Heart Association CPR course (which I highly recommend to everyone!) but getting up so early got me out of my food routine. According, in no particular order, these are my snacks so far - and as mamachef would say, "I may be finished for the day and then again I may not" - gosh, I love that line!

I think it needs at least 25-30 min of cooking time...It's nicely chewy and crisp outside. My jewish husband who grew up eating the ones with no dairy said these were really good.

                                                                                                                                    2. Doritos and bean dip followed by a grape popcicle and a snack sized take five bar. Don't judge me. :-)

Only thing I can't join on is the omelette, because the steak is tough and the eggs are tender and it feels like a contretemps in my mouth. :)

Now that will work. Hmmmm. Dinner calls. Oh wait; I haven't got any steak. I ate it all cold, dipped in Mrs. Pritchard's Bitchin' Mustard Sauce. :)

I get it on MY sandwiches, and on MY cold steak. I've actually thought about putting a few drops of green or blue food coloring into it, to disguise it from the 2-3 people who know what's in that jar, but that grosses even me out, and so I dole it out jealously and mingily.

For the extras - and we do extras; the two of us usually split a steak, but we almost always make three or four just for the leftovers - we go for rare. For the reheat, I slice the steak thinly and reheat it on my toaster oven pan that I have already brought to screaming hot under "broil." Steak slices go on, toaster oven goes off. A check of the meat tells me off I need a little more broil, then toaster oven goes on for a bit...watch it like a hawk. Takes little time, and it's my favorite way to reheat steak. The strips end up medium rare in most cases, bordering on medium when I am distracted. Sometimes we do resort to the microwave, but it's dicey on timing, and doesn't do anything nice to the fat. We nibble the cold leftovers, too...that's usually with some cold leftover potatoes and some-sort-of-mustardy sauce/vinaigrette.

                                                                                                                                                      2. You Sunday snackers have ruined me - now snacking on a tub of hummus I was planning to save but I guess I'll be buying another. It's from a local company who makes insanely crazy flavors of hummus like sushi and cinnamon raisin. My choice today was their Asian Fire hummus which is loaded with Chili garlic sauce and diced peppers. It's a celebration weekend for me with a future job contract signed and delivered so in the spirit of indulgence, I'm glad I popped it open.

I had such a good time snacking all day yesterday that I've just done the same today . . . in a few hours, I'm planning to cook pizza on my gas grill. It's the first time that I've done that. The SO/DH is not a pizza nut, like me. So I'm on my own. But I've been reading up about it and I plan to try my first grilled pizza. It will be white cheese, spinach and garlic. My pre-pizza snack is burned-to-a-crisp Brussels sprouts sprinkled with Penzey's "Greek Seasoning". Those are in the oven now and almost ready.

                                                                                                                                                          1. re: MrsPatmore

I think I've fallen to the snack monster today was well. What else is a girl to do on Sunday fall night when SO has been away for months restructuring a company? I think it's gonna be a good night. Grilled pizza sounds great, though I've never had it. I'm sure you could get some nice charred bits on that crust.

I woke up this morning and said, "hey, I'm not eating meals today, I'm just going to eat whatever strikes my fancy, when it strikes my fancy"

                                                                                                                                                                This is very liberating!!!

I wanted pizza towards the supper hour, and I made exactly what I wanted. Even the SO/DH (who normally is NOT a pizza fan) ate numerous pieces. Oh so good!! I may just keep snacking forever. I've preferred snacks to meals my whole life. Thank you mamachef for starting this thread and thank you to all the others who have joined in to let me know that I AM NOT ALONE in my love of snacking all day long.

I just ate two "butterfingers" miniature candy bars (leftover from Halloween). Thankfully, they did not taste as good as I remembered as a child some decades ago. But, I ate TWO without any guilt. Thank you, my fellow snackers!

                                                                                                                                                                        1. re: mamachef

I love how I seem to confuse myself but it makes sense, it seemed tasty so why am I saving it. My mom used to laugh when I'd pick out treats to "save for later." I'm a new hummus fanatic but whoa am I a fan.

                                                                                                                                                                      3. I made a pan of choc/choc chip walnut brownies the other day, and the large square in the middle was still a bit gooshy but the rest was perfect, so I squared away the cooked ones and wrapped them, and then put that square in the fridge to tighten up when the chocolate chips cooled, which is exactly what happened and is what I am currently spooning up, sided with a glass of milk and...yes, it gets weird here - a small dish of pickled beet and cucumber salad. Damn good thing nobody here's the judging type, huh? Bahaw!!

Just jealous of that beet and cukes salad. Beets make me have a gastroparesis attack something fierce. I miss them terribly. Especially pickled

Post-dinner eats - Prosciutto San Daniele next door to a bowl of mashed canned salmon sprinkled with Feta. An odd grab bag combination but quite pleasing as a likely early bedtime snack.

Fresh, hot boiled peanuts. The little suckers took three hours but it was worth every minute waiting on these mushy little gems.

I remember eating them growing up and loving them but they didn't taste the same. nothing wrong with the peanuts..just my palate has changed i guess and nobody in my family was crazy about it either so ended up throwing it away.

That's why I usually buy them at the Chevron station. LOL.

Did you make them nice and spicy? The only thing better than boiled peanuts are spicy boiled peanuts. I love boiled peanuts so much that I'm almost willing to forgive my friends here in the South for not having baked beans on breakfast menus.

Time to discard the snob!! LOL (And I'm generally not food snobby, as is evidenced by my instant love of boiled peanuts, swamp cabbage, etc.)

Ooooh, we also like the Lifehouse Ranch. I think I like that one better but they are both great. Darnit, I refuse to open that fridge....bad things will happen!

I would assume he's pretty discriminatory in loving the good stuff, but hopefully you'll let us know. I can't have SO walking around ranting about loving crap dressing. It's the backup since I usually make a big batch for him since it appears on everything. I'm not judging I have my own condiment crack.

The reason that I was a bit snobby about trying Marie's Ranch Dressing was this is the same guy who loved Kraft Catalina . . . which I think they have now discontinued, thank heavens!!!

I use this as a base and then make different versions - bacon, jalapeno, Dijon etc. Sometimes I'll throw in some sour cream or yogurt for the mayonnaise it's always great and keeps well not that it lasts long.

I also usually have Green Goddess around and it's quite hysterical when SO mistakes it for Ranch. The hit of tarragon is never what he's expecting.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                1/4 teaspoon sugar
Salt, freshly ground black pepper, smoked red pepper to taste,
                                                                                                                                                                                                                small pinch white pepper

Add egg and red pepper to garlic and mix with whisk. Whisk in vinegar. Slowly whisk in olive oil. Then whisk in yogurt and buttermilk until smooth. Add salt, sugar, black and white pepper and mix. Add blue cheese to one side of the bowl and mash it with your hands, incorporating in the dressing as you mash. Continue to mash and blend cheese into the dressing with your hands until the cheese is well incorporated. Then use whisk to mix it up more. Taste and adjust seasoning.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                1. re: fldhkybnva

That sounds very good. I would be tempted to add a splash of worcestershire sauce but only after I tried it verbatum first. I get annoyed when someone makes a recipe and makes five subs and bitches it was no good.

Thank you so much, FLDHKYBNVA even though your screen name is hard to type!!!

Or wait, let others have a salad course then more feast for me. Your house sounds like ours we have at least 4 meat mains, 3 stuffing, countless side dishes and 4 of each of the gazillion desserts and well our family has literally 10 people maximum if we really extend the meaning of related. I'm a turkey fanatic so I usually get my share as there aren't many of those around. It makes for lots of leftovers but it's so great. I don't usually make it home these days since I often am on call or have to work the next day but I do the same for me and SO and then the food has to be eaten, so we eat it. I know, I have heard that before some call me Fieldhawk.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                          1. re: fldhkybnva

I'm a starve-then-feast person, myself. Unfortunately, I have people in my family and extended family (as well as the single Holiday drop-ins, which are 3-4 +/- around here) that claim they will faint if they have to wait all day to eat anything. So I put out a small salad an hour or so before dinner is served. It shuts them up, basically. (I do not bring out the homemade rolls until dinner, though!!!)

If they really b*tch, I'll also put out crudites. That also shuts them up!! LOL They all complain until it's time to eat, then they're glad that they didn't fill up on a bunch of heavy apps beforehand.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                            1. re: MrsPatmore

I actually realized my Thanksgiving menu has no vegetables unless potatoes count. We usually eat Thanksgiving food all week and then cook lots of meals on the last of the "to make recipe list" from the year which does usually include veggies and non-Thanksgiving food. I'm a usual low carber so I meet December with lovely Thanksgiving bloat but as the kids these days say "yolo - you only live once." Perhaps cheese and dips will tied them over.

                                                                                                                                                                                                              2. re: fldhkybnva

I don't know where you are located, but apparently we've been loving on virtually the same Buttermilk dressing together. LOL From the Penzey's website:

                                                                                                                                                                                                                Buttermilk Ranch
America's homegrown dressing; ranch style salad dressing is lower in fat than most, as it uses buttermilk for flavor and body. Ranch style dressing is also excellent for fresh vegetable dip, or sprinkled on baked chicken or fish, 1-2 tsp. per lb. To make 1 Cup dressing, mix 1 TB. seasoning in 1 TB. water, let stand five minutes, then whisk with ½ Cup buttermilk and ½ Cup mayonnaise. Also excellent as a fresh vegetable dip. For a lower calorie version use low-fat mayonnaise, or up the proportion of buttermilk, which will make the dressing thinner, but equally tasty. Ranch dressing should be refrigerated, check the freshness date on the buttermilk carton, and write it on the dressing bottle. HAND-MIXED FROM SALT, BELL PEPPERS, GARLIC, ONION, SUGAR, BLACK PEPPER, PARSLEY, THYME, BASIL.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                1. re: MrsPatmore

If only it didn't have salt. Nearly all of their salt blends I've tried are over the top for me but I have a low salt threshold so that's not saying much.

                                                                                                                                                                                                      2. re: suzigirl

I always have it around. I also like the blue cheese vinaigrette, but I have to add a little lemon to cut what I percieve as a sweet flavor.

                                                                                                                                                                                                    3. Back to the topic of snacking, I have now moved on to MORE THAN ONE slice of pumpkin-spice bread.

I took several recipes for pumpkin bread and gingerbread and morphed them; then, I doubled all of quantity of spices called for, added a bunch of fresh grated ginger, topped with that big-crystal, crunchy kind of sugar, and baked it. I only wish that I had written down all of the ingredients, because dang, this is one of my better experiments.

But I figure if I have to wait from 5 am until nearly 6 pm to find time to even stop for a snack, then I'm going to make it a snack that counts!! And I know all of you CH'ers are with me on this one. So thank you for the support! :-) Snacking is so much better than meals, anyway. Multi-course meals are highly overrated IMHO. (Thanksgiving excluded).

Thank you for excluding my favorite day of the year! I'm trying to not think about it because I'll be like an anxious kid on Christmas Eve.

                                                                                                                                                                                                          2. So I signed up for something called "Graze" wherein you receive one or two boxes per month of various snacks in the mail. The first box is free, and after that, $6/ea. including shipping. So my first box arrived today . . . and I was all excited since once again, I haven't had time for even a bite of food yet today!!! I ripped open the box. And it wasn't that impressive. I'm going to try a few more boxes but if today's box is typical, I don't think I'll keep the subscription very long. BTW here is the website in case anyone is interested . . . .https://www.graze.com/us/

I don't think the contents of each little plastic box are more than 1/3 cup each.

Enjoy those nibbles. can we figure out how to get you some food during the day? Although snacking would still be allowed. I'm notorious for forgetting to eat but...

If I get hungry but don't have any spare time, I've found that these 42 grams-of-protein "shots" really do the trick. Trust me when I say that 42 grams of protein will FILL YOU UP . . . and I know that you are generally a low-carber so you'll be glad to know that there are no carbs . . . the flavors are not bad, either. I buy them locally but I see they are available on Amazon:

Watermelon and fruit punch are not bad. I haven't tried the green apple flavor.

BTW they taste good even at room temperature (although I prefer them cold). Now here's my question - do these qualify as a "snack"? To me, no, but YMMV

I want to clarify that I absolutely am grateful for every bite of food that I receive - I've had several years of experience as an aid worker in 3rd world and developing nations and I do understand and have experienced food scarcity. I helped start a program for malnourished children via Feed My Starving Children.org (http://www.fmsc.org/), which is an absolutely fantastic organization, and when you've seen marasmus and kwashiorkor firsthand, you'll never be the same (not to mention, you'll never take food for granted).

If anything, these experiences have caused me to have a greater appreciation for food, overall, and for this reason, I just don't stuff my face with whatever happens to be in front of me - or whatever I can grab quickest - at the moment that I feel a twinge of hunger. That's what I meant to say, not that "I couldn't be bothered to eat if the food wasn't up to my standards".

I hope this makes sense to anyone who's reading this - because if you knew me, you'd know that haughty and highfalutin' are the last adjectives that'd be used to describe me. :-) The issue of food scarcity is real both here in the USA and in other countries and I apologize if my comments were insensitive.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  1. re: MrsPatmore

Yea, I think that counts as your meals. btw I love protein shakes, we call them milk shakes around here granted it's pure protein and either almond milk or water in a blender it's foamy and delicious. I agree with your philosophy. I rarely eat at conferences which are always loaded with food but to me not really worth eating and if I forgot my lunch then well I go hungry until I get home. Too bad the snack deliveries doesn't seem worth it. I got my mom a monthly delivery service of unique regional items and it was OK but also seriously expensive for what you ended up getting.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                2. re: MrsPatmore

So I entered in a few choices and exclusions and it'll will be interesting to see if that changes my impression of this *professional* snack-by-mail service. LOL And love that it's called "Graze" - tip 'o the hat to mamachef on that

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  1. re: MrsPatmore

                                                                                                                                                                                                                    1. re: suzigirl

The price is $6/each which does include shipping, but I was kind of shocked/dismayed to see just how little actual food was inside all of that fancy packaging. (I should know better by now but I figured what the heck, the first box was free)

I can get the large size of Cajun boiled peanuts at the Chevron for $3.99

                                                                                                                                                                                                                      1. re: MrsPatmore

I used to be able to get boiled peanuts everywhere but i cannot anymore. That is why I made them. I needed my fix.

Get your car filled up with gas and need boiled peanuts?? Yes, you can get both at the same place!!

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  2. Dubu chorim, or stewed spicy tofu. Oh, I could eat this every day, with a hint of sesame oil added for good measure.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                    1. I am having a very very VERY small Cobb salad, so in my book it's a snack. :) I am having my snacky little portion with half a sourdough artichoke/sharp cheddar roll from the Cheese Board and I'll undoubtedly be snacking on that later.

And I'd eat a whole sourdough/artichoke/sharp cheddar roll . . . not 1/2. How is it possible to eat only 1/2 of such a combination?

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        1. re: MrsPatmore

Only the prospect of "more later" keeps me off the second half for any length of time. This is one of those items that it's truly dangerous to have around, so I buy one because I actually have to think about going to get these before I actually go and do it, and it's saved me a few times thus far. :)

Tonight's "snack" is homemade pizza with roasted eggplant and anchovy paste. I don't really have time for any of that, so I made the pizza dough in a bread machine while I preheated the oven for pizza (and simultaneously roasted the eggplant). By the time the oven was preheated, the eggplant and the pizza dough was ready. And I cooked it extra-long because I love me some browned crust. YES I am a lazy, multi-tasker.

Funny how I never heard her, until you guys told me that she tasted good! LOL :-(

Eventually I tossed some salad fixins' with the Marie's and threw it on top of the pizza (resting comfortably in the fridge)

But where did you get the French Fries?

Personally, I'm hoping someone will tell me that there is a worthy oven version of fries. I'm not a snob, I'm willing to try anything . . . so please do tell where you got the fries to go with this awesome Sriracha aioli and I'll gladly snack right along with you

They do the trick! Not too thick nor shoestringy.

As I was pondering a deli meat I've yet to try the deli guy asked if I'd tried "John Boone" well hmm no I haven't but of course I will. I'm nibbling on John Boone ham aka Niman Ranch smoked ham which is just a heavenly piece of traditional Southern smoked ham. I'm glad I only bought a wee bit though I'm sure I'll be back. The ham is not alone, he is accompanied by a few pieces of P'tit Basque. I am in serious holiday spirit which means my usual errands included grocery shopping which apparently resulted in buying a lot of not real foods which I realized as I got home. So long real meals. SO needs to come back!

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                1. Simplest, best snack ever! well, no ever but surprisingly delicious. Who knew braised cabbage without bacon could be just as delicious? With my favorite zucchini butter in mind I tried it with shredded cabbage - saute in olive oil, shallots and garlic, deglaze with stock, seasoned with whatever spices you have on hand in this case Badia was the choice. And, wabam! A great bedtime snack and my first time eating cooked cabbage without stomach revolt, since uh that last time.

A small cup of vegetable soup and and small portion of scrambled eggs from a takeout place around the corner, along with a wasa cracker with some cream cheese and diet ginger ale. Over ice, of course.

And now I'm nibbling a piece of sightly stale halvah which is actually pretty good hecause its sort of chewy. I'm wishing I had a Tastykake right about now, but my sister bought a cheese danish this morning.- large puffy, doughy, cheesy thing- that we both have been picing at. It wil have to suffice til I get to the store. Ahhh, the hardship!

The reason? You said you were nibbling on halvah (LOVE it) but I glanced quickly and thought it said "hashish." Me and my druggy guttermind, right?
Life is tough, babygirl. But a Danish? That one sounds like heaven, especially if you heated it up just a bit, w/ a schmear of butter or even a dab of cream cheese, just to gild the lily.

I've lost my stay at home mind today!! This is why I should go to work even when I've been excused. Another cheese face off - Maytag vs. Stilton! I really want to love the Stilton but my heart really belongs to Maytag. I keep trying it to see why it's the "king of blues" but it's not clicking for me. There is some broccoli to accompany.

Don't make me go all Martha :) on you. I'd make a spread, whipping the blue into some cream cheese and perhaps a hit of basil or a spoonful of sun-dried tomatoes minced in, and toast a torpedo roll or a Dutch crunch; spread on the blue cheese mixture, layer in that thinly sliced breast (lots of cracked pepper on mine, please.) A layer of thin tomatoes, give it a firm press down w/ your hand, and lunch/dinner is served!!

If you don't use too much, it should tame some of the sharpness. But I'd definitely whip it into cream cheese or a light chevre w/ herbs - that too will s-t-r-e-t-c-h the flavor way out and calm it way down.

I told myself no random grocery store wandering this weekend so I can stop filling the house with food in preparation for the holidays. But alas your mention of a cream cheese spread led me right to the dangerous cheese section and I walked away with Boursin cheese. I think it's a perfect match for that not-so-good blue cheese. Thanks for helping make my meals tasty today.

Gherkins!! Where have you been all my life? Last week Whole Foods had $3 off the Olive Bar so I tried some new things including the Gherkins. I'm a pickled anything snack fanatic but I think the Gherkins might replace my beloved giant Kosher pickles and for less sodium perhaps :)

Here on the snacking thread, I imagine that having them both will be encouraged! And you just reminded me that I have a jar of quick pickled daikon and carrots in my fridge that I will be snacking on when I get home. Yay for pickles. Love them all!

It's sad, but I really do have to ration them. The Gherkins can fulfill my need for sour and pickled without sending me into orca bloated territory. Indeed, kimchi and I are close friends too.

I truly love acidic anything. I now let myself have 2 every Friday when I go to Wegmans but I usually scrape out some of the inside pulp which seems to have more of the brine and it leaves more of the crispy part which I like. Now I have to hunt for Gherkins I love. The Whole Foods ones were pretty good.

I straight up fully believed I was the only pickle dissector on the planet. I love you very much, even more now. :) I LOVVVVVE the pulp best, though. I'd be happy if it was like 75:25, innards to crispage.

Gherkins and sheep's milk yogurt. So glad I found this yogurt even if it does cost an arm and a leg.

Two hard boiled eggs, plain. Just unadulterated egginess. One rather large, extremely juicy red pear, topped with the last bit of a very nice wedge of Stilton. And I'm definitely NOT done for the day by any means . . . .

I also had a terrible night of the worst insomnia and have been zombie-like today! I'm thinking that I need a short nap. Before that, however, I'm tucking into a couple of chocolate chip cookies and a glass of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. The drink will be in a Tervis tumbler, and contain 3 round ice cubes. Call me crazy but for me, it is the littlest details that make a snack super-satisfying or just so-so.

I'm sorry to hear of anyone's pet woes because I am a huge animal lover. Pets are people, too, at least in my house. And they get snacks.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          1. re: MrsPatmore

I used to be a napping champion in college, but then something happened. I just defrosted spinach and I think it might need to be mixed with Boursin cheese for a snack. I have some work to do at home so dinner will be late. I do enjoy the little things, I picked up shrimp this week and asked for 0.5 lb but that was 9 shrimp so I had to have 1 more or 1 less. I'm sure the fishmonger thought I was insane, but oh well. Oh yes, the snacks got him back to health or at least reassured me that he didn't want to eat things. Do you use Almond Breeze?

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            1. re: fldhkybnva

Also, I'm with you on the shrimp!! I could go for three large crab-stuffed baked shrimp right now (size U-7, please). Oh, and a glass of unoaked chardonnay would be perfect.

Exceptin' i chop the eggs very roughly in my OWN PINK BOWL THAT NOBODY ELSE GETS TO USE FOR ANYTHING: ONLY ME> nice big chunks, and add a knob of unsalted butter, a good sprinkle of salt, and cracked black pepper. Oh, this is a long time favorite. The best is the yolk at the bottom, crumblies melting into the almost-melted butter.....

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              1. re: mamachef

suzigirl and mamachef, you ladies need to make egg butter. Really. We use it every year at the winter holiday spread on Finnish Karelian pies. It is mashed hard cooked egg and butter, seasoned. That's it. I use about 8 to 10 eggs for a half pound of softened butter, but I tend to go egg-heavy; other recipes tend toward butter-heavy at 6 eggs per half pound butter. Tasty stuff. One can herb it up a little too, but it's pretty hard to argue with just salt and pepper. Fwiw, this is one of the few times I cleave to my Scandinavian roots and use white pepper. Egg-butter, to me, just doesn't look right with black pepper.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Try the egg butter. Yum.

I know I'm going to try it. It's used as a spread, right?

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  1. re: mamachef

And know: it's at it's best with just cooked eggs and room temp butter, so everything is at a perfect point. It keeps fine; it's just *perfect* with eggs fresh out of the pot.

And I lied. I don't just make this at the holidays and in quantity. I have secret liaisons with small-quantity egg butter on a regular basis.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              2. re: suzigirl

I was going to make a couple runny yolkers for bedtime snack, but it's been a runny yolk parade recently, I think it's time for a hard boiled.

NO thank you on the liverwurst! My older brother used to torment me as a child. One of the ways he did so was by holding me down and breathing hot liverwurst breath on me!! However, I don't want to yuck on your yum, so I'll just say, "No thanks, you can have mine!" :-D

But be forewarned: addictive stuff. Some people want to have ads blocked in their internet dealings; I sometimes wish to have all mentions of liverwurst blocked, since I get a craving...

I ate mine up last weekend, fried in bacon grease, on top of French toast, drizzled with maple syrup.

While I have no experience with the store, I'd miss my bet if you couldn't pick up some liverwurst at their deli counter. For all the people I know that detest the stuff, there must be enough of us who love it to keep it in the mix. I typically buy Boar's Head, because I trust their gluten-free designation, but I have honestly never met a liverwurst I didn't love. Really love.

That way you can get one slice and try it before you commit. I turn into a vacuum cleaner around the stuff.

My hub is off on a solo grocery shop, and I neglected to put liverwurst on the list. Dumb, dumb Cay. But I should go on the wagon with liverwurst so I can pig out at Christmas. Still, I am snacking on liverwurst in my imagination right now.

I just searched my local Wegmans site and it looks like they have Hartmann's fine and fine smoked liverwurst.

I didn't think of mustard. I have the perfect mustard with datil peppers. Looks like I need another snack.

Grilled bread cheese and fresh tomatoes. Another grocery store wandering find courtesy of the deli guy who approached me as I was staring at the cheese trying to decide. Wow, this stuff is delicious! I guess I better try halloumi next

I have been hunting halloumi for years. If you can tell me what brand this bread cheese is I can find out if i can get it instead. I did find Yancy's Fancy horseradish cheddar. Good stuff.

Here's a pic http://bkvineyardmarket.wordpress.com.... Actually, it was interesting. I asked the cheesemonger about Halloumi and how it compared and he mentioned that they haven't been able to get it and most other Greek cheeses for a while now with the whole government shutdown in Greece. I'm glad to hear about the horseradish cheddar. I've been meaning to try it. I picked up the steakhouse onion yesterday and planned to use it for lazy woman onion soup chicken but alas I got home and it was nowhere to be found nor on my receipt so I assume I left it somewhere in the store. Hmm, who does that?

I have a WF near me. I will check it out. I wish I could get the steakhouse onion. It sounds so good. I keep looking though.

I am on to pickled okra and marinated bocconcino. And steaks for dinner and a panko crusted chicken breast slathered in pimento cheese on a Martin's bun for lunch. It's been a great eating day.

I'm back in heating pad land :( I think I might be eating too fast and exacerbating my stomach's tendency to not want to move. I guess I'll be snacking!!

And if you catch an actual problem early it can save you a lifetime of my mindshattering pain.I really feel for you sweetie. Take it easy on your belly and feel better soon. Hugs.

I should look into that, thanks for the recommendation, this is so frustrating. I made a list of everything I ate the past two days and despite not being that much I'm pregnant with triplets. Good thing there's cheese and bacon around. Nibbles work well in times like this when I have to abandon the usual meat fiesta.

It also could be a fluke but since our intestinal health is seventy percent of our immunity it's not worth gambling on.

I seem to be getting these attacks nearly once a month now and it's just miserable. I'm sure I can find someone in the great thriving medical metropolis of Baltimore to evaluate me and provide some suggestions.

Just for suggestions and maybe meds to help the attacks. If you are like me it can really throw a wrench in your life and you can't afford that with all of your goals. Hope it passes soon. :-( It can make you lose weight(I lost 34 lbs) and you cannot afford to lose the weight. Best wishes.

It's real, I swear :) at a whopping buck and a few cents, 34 lbs weight loss would kill me. I guess I'll be in the MrsPatmore crew for a few days.

And ibuprofen sometimes works. Mostly I have to avoid food and even saliva makes me vomit. It is very hard to deal with.

I keep pondering id there was something I ate Sunday that made me sick and just he thought gives me nausea which is actually why I asked :) this is the girl who forced herself to eat at a steakhouse a day after getting braces, glutton for punishment I guess. I just hate when the biology overcomes my will!

I can have something to eat and go back to snack on the same thing a few hours later and go into a full on attack. I have even had an attack from Gatorade. Gastroparesis is a fickle bitch. I would try MrsPatmores suggestions down thread. They are good ones. Sadly I usually cannot keep anything down so I use promethazine suppositories. But that is extreme in your case i think. I wish i could fix you. I understand your frustration that you mist be feeling.

I'm a huge consumer of ibuprofen, myself - for some reason, ONLY Advil liqui-gels will do it for me (I've tried the generic brands and they are not the same).

The tablets will dissolve under your tongue (nice when you aren't able to swallow due to nausea). Also ginger in any form including tea, but especially fresh, helps treat nausea. Peppermint tea works for some people.

A prescription (zofran) of sublingual tablets - these work almost instantly to eliminate nausea but are pricey if your health insurance doesn't cover. Zofran is also available as an injection, which works when even putting the dissolvable tablet under your tongue makes you gag and heave.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                1. re: MrsPatmore

Look for those tablets in a health food store, although it's possible Whole Foods sells them (they're popular to fight morning sickness). Studies have proven papain (the enzyme) is effective in treating nausea! Then, stop at Walgreen's and buy some Emetrol! Here's hoping that you find relief soon!

It's called Emetrol and it's available at any decent pharmacy!!! I learned about it from a friend who is a pharmacist, and I keep a bottle in my medicine cabinet at all times. Just follow the package directions - you take just a very small amount to start. Here is more info:http://emetrol.com/otc-nausea-medicat...

That situation is bumming me out! Especially with Thanksgiving around the corner. Sending positive wishes your way, and I hope Emetrol and/or one of my other suggestions is of some help!! Get well soon, my friends!

The Pharmacist advised me that the chief active ingredient is actually HFCS, on the theory that sugar does indeed help quell nausea. Like I said, I'm not positive, and for all I know they've changed the formula anyway by now, but his opinion was that a half tsp. of the HFCS would work as well.

Ginger-infused chammomile tea - just use a decent brand chammomile teabag and a quarter-sized (and thickness) round smashed fresh ginger, and let steep. Drink at room temperature - and in fact, a lot of people's nausea improves when they avoid any temp. extremes in their beverages.

The ol' salt/sugar combo helps a great many people: you know - 7-up or ginger ale that actually contains ginger, :) and saltines, pretzels, water crackers and the like. And speaking of salt, broth w/ a hit of lemon and a dash of salt can do a whole lot real quick towards re-gaining your equilibrium. Gatorade, if you can stomach the flavor, just for electrolytes though it doesn't address the nausea itself.

Actually I have loaded up on fresh ginger. Last night when really sick I somehow managed to grate it into a glass of water. I don't remember that but woke up with some of it next to me.

I think I overloaded last night attempting to eat a real dinner and am paying for it. The plan now is to stick to soups and breads until Monday morning. Perhaps my stomach could take it tomorrow but I'm afraid to risk it.

I have not seen a doctor because I'm just that annoying person. I am a doctor so I'm even worse about seeing them. However, this morning I was so fed up and feeling bad I called my primary care office's on call physician to ask for advice. As I expected there's not much to do other than take it easy although I was convinced to actually go buy a carb or too and stop trying to push myself back to my usual meals. If I still feel bad on Monday I'll visit my primary care physician. It's just weird as stomach viruses tend to run their courses in a few days and I thought I was all clear last night so that's why I had dinner but I guess not.

Ok, so thanks to Governor O'Malley, yes I do have a few suggestions for you. You can find my e-mail somewheres around my profile if you're remotely interested. It's recipes; nothing sinister. :)

I know people who have gotten serious relief from it.

The nausea for me is intermittent although when it's present it's bad, it's more the other end which is driving me to want to dive in a hole. So add to anything warm or hot? Me too, and thanks. I keep thinking I'm better but then I'm not. Knowing me I'll probably "risk" it again tomorrow with real meals but I told myself no I even put all the legitimate cuts of meat including the steak I bought specifically for Sunday steak night in the freezer!

This is the 3rd time probably in 4 months I've been laid up with severe pain and struggle with intermittent belly issues weekly. Suzigirl experienced something similar so was lending me a thoughtful word. I agree. Not sure why it doesn't, nearly every other forum board does.

And to think I'm on my way to being a GI pathologist, guess I should stay in training :)I imagine you either stop snacking altogether or elevate the snacking to epic levels over the holidays. Either way I'm excited to hear about everyone's holiday snackeroonies!

Corn muffin that was a new recipe that I tested a couple weeks ago but this without the sour cream. I think I prefer my new recipe but I need to add a touch of heat to it though.

Mix all ingredients together. Grease muffin tin or square pan. Bake for 18 mins if using muffin tin or 30 mins if using square pan. Should be golden brown when done.

The original recipe had only 1 8.5 oz can of cream corn but added 1 8 oz container of sour cream. But everything else stayed the same.

And then because I'm weird like that, I'd probably spread them w/ honey butter. In fact, I'm sure I would. Or jalapeno jelly and unsalted butter.

Sadly, I had NO potato chips to eat with my tuna salad, and without chips it just didn't hit the spot. I tried sprinkling on some of those fried shallots (the kind they sell in Asian markets) but it still wasn't right. Also, my drink choices were water or orange flavor crystal light. I should have gone with water! LOL

I've been a bad, bad snacker. Yesterday, I ate a fish sandwich from Burger King, followed a few hours later by a huge bag of original Lay's wavy potato chips. Also a bunch of diet Coke over ice. I can't think of anything that I ate yesterday that was in the least bit nutritional, except for one hard boiled egg and a few roasted brussels sprouts (with a dab of Dijon mustard) around 3 am.

I went back to BK and tried these new things called "satisfries" (of course the advertisement caught my eye yesterday) which are supposedly healthier than the standard fries. Yep, I had a LARGE order. And no, I was NOT "satisfried"!!! LOL

I haven't had one of these sandwiches in years, and it was kind of startling to find 3 pickle slices in my sandwich yesterday. I don't remember them, and I wish they had been omitted. ETA: Never mind, I looked on the BK website and it seems that pickles are "standard" on the "Premium Alaskan Fish Sandwich". IMHO they did not enhance the sandwich in any way (and I'm a pickle person).

I would have asked for no pickles (or on the side). I love the contrast between the piping hot fried fish, steamed bun and cold, crispy iceberg lettuce. Also I ordered a side of tartar sauce (extra) just in case - but did not use it.

Kind of reminded me of the "horsey" sauce they used to give out at Arby's.

"Bad, bad snacker," to me implies that you have done most excellently well, MrsP. Can't wait to hear about your weekend.

So, hats off to you. Also (and again this is totally just based on my own linguistic weirdnesses) the word "satisfries" is so cutesy and annoying that even if I loved them, I'd have to hate them.

For all the snackers, here's another snack delivery box similar to the one MrsPatmore mentioned below at graze.com http://naturebox.com/

I see that the Naturebox.com offers "full-size" snacks (whatever that means) but the subscription fee is $19.95/mo. for 5 packages. Seems a bit pricey, but without having tried the product, I shouldn't judge! (The Graze.com subscription was $6/mo which included shipping, but as stated, the snacks themselves were very small - it was mostly creative packaging).
