I'll happily second Island Creek and add Coppa Enoteca in the South End.

9 park is within walking distance and overlooks the Boston Common.
Ristorante Toscano is on beautiful Charles street and has been satisfying customers for over thirty years.

Also, what does $$$ - $$$$ mean? Do you want loud and fun? Quiet and refined? Are drinks important? Wine? Cocktails? This stuff all matters.

Island Creek is a good choice for east coast seafood; ditto, Neptune Oyster though that place does not take reservations and is quite small.
