Seattle:Dim Sum and Ramen

Going to be in Seattle next Wednesday thru Sunday. Last time I was there I went to Jade Garden, but got there too late for dim sum. I've heard Harbor City was good. Any places that serve dim sum late? Also, is there any ramen spots worth checking out?

    1. What do you consider "late"? Dim sum isn't usually a dinnertime 'event.'

        Yes, I know traditional Dim Sum is breakfast/lunch, but a lot of spots I've been to in New York and Chicago serve it all night. Not sure if anywhere in Seattle does this. Was just curious if anywhere does it past normal lunch hours.

          Dim Sum King is open until 7:00pm. Not fine dining by any means, it's more of a cafeteria, but you can eat yourself silly for cheap!

            Any particular reason you can't go for dim sum at a "normal" time? :)

              I think Honey Court and Purple Dot both serve dim sum in some form until late? But...I mean, there's way better Chinese food--until late, even--if you're willing to give up the "dim sum"...

                Yeah, to me, it's along the lines of thinking you're gonna get great fish at a steakhouse. It might happen but why not take a safer route.

                  okay thanks. I can get dim sum at "normal" times and will probably just do that. I was just curious if there was any places that served past lunch that was quality.

                    i can't speak to honey court, but i'd avoid purple dot if i were you. in my experience, they've been heading steadily downhill in the last 5ish years. harbor city has never let me down, though i agree that arriving at brunch-lunch time is your best bet (although you CAN order dimsum dishes fresh from the menu all day) because i prefer cart-style ordering.

                  New Hong Kong on Jackson does a dinner dim sum. No carts, steamed/fried to order, I assume. Not the best dim sum, but they have all the classics, and they're pretty good.

                  Haven't been in a while, but Tea Garden used to do a full dim sum all day long.

              2. dim sum past 1:30pm = microwaved dim sum.

                  I've had fresh dim sum at all hours in both New York and Chicago

                    I think you may find that the dim sum you get almost anywhere on the Left Coast is better than other parts of the country, including Manhattan and Flushing. But go for the better/best, not just to have it at a time of day that you prefer. Just me :)

                2. Duk Li has dim sum until 7pm, every day but Tuesday. It's not the greatest, but I like ordering off a menu instead of playing dim sum cart roulette.

                  Tai Kong style is open later; they aren't primarily a dim sum place, but they have the usual dim sum staples on the menu.

                  1. Bamboo Village in Wallingford serves decent dim sum all day.

                      Sometimes we don't want to deal with the traffic getting from Lake City area to ID so Wallingford would be convenient. Thanks.

                        Last time I went, they had neglected to remove the plastic wrapping from their prepackaged har gow that they served me. That was during prime Sunday dim sum hours.

                        Unless they've changed their ways in recent months, they're far from "decent".

                            JB Garden is kind of a hole in the wall at the strip mall where Holman Road and Greenwood meet [right next to Tiko Riko which is pretty good, too] JB Garden has pretty decent dim sum and they are kind a dim sum all the time place with BBQ as well and a few other dishes. Not as much selection but what I have tried has been pretty good. They are open 9:00AM to 7:00PM. Prices are low so the it's not too painful to try it out. What they have seems to be as good as most of the Seattle dim sum places and it is convenient if you are in the North end.

                              9AM??? Now you're talkin'! For us dim sum is a breakfast meal so early is great. Next time we're in Seattle visiting the grandson (oh, yeah, and his parents) we'll have to check it out. Thanks.

                            Since it's a couple of blocks from my house, I go there two or three times a month. The quality of the har gow varies for sure but I've never had it served with the plastic wrap left on. An anomaly I'm sure.

                              The plastic wrap that was left on wasn't a random piece of saran wrap from the process of food preparation in the kitchen. This was plastic packaging/wrapping from a frozen foods package. My point with the plastic wrap is that it indicates that it's a prepackaged commercial item - meaning it's the same thing you can buy out of a freezer in an Asian grocery store.

                              If they can't be bothered to make their own - especially for an item that is a primary staple of dim sum - I can safely assume that they also use prepackaged freezer food for most of their other dim sum items.

                              But it's entirely possible that they've changed their ways in the months since my visit.

                                I understood what you meant by the plastic wrap. My experience is that most places are buying already prepared items for at least some of their selection. So the fact that the har gow isn't made in house doesn't bother me.

                                  Really? I've not walked back in their kitchen but when I have in other dim sum spots (not in Seattle) that's certainly not the case. Is this particular to Seattle? Not good. Next time we're up, I'm certainly going to check out Jade Garden.

                                    If you're not going to the big names - Harbor City, Jade Garden in Seattle (though not a fan of JG), or Top Gun and Joi's in Bellevue, maybe Imperial Garden in Renton - dim sum is definitely a crap shoot. Dim sum quality demands a certain turnover rate to maintain the freshness of the kitchen output. Without the requisite turnover, a number of places will resort to reheating commercially prepackaged items or day(s)-old items.

                                    But when it comes to bad dim sum / Chinese, at least we're not Portland.

                                        Visited Noble Court yesterday for dimsum. Despite being a 15-20 minute walk from my house, I haven't visited them in over 10 years. A couple bad visits back then deterred me from returning.

                                        My wife was interested to see if there's a change in ownership since the last time, as it would be nice to have another dimsum place on the rotation. This repeat visit did not fare any better than the visit 10 years ago. The food was stale and bland, made with low quality ingredients. The waitresses were quite belligerent about pushing high-margin non-dimsum items which is always my peeve.

                                        But for Grade C food, they at least have the decency to charge commensurate prices - 7-8 dishes for $30 tax+tip included. And no waits (which at noon which is a red flag for a dimsum place on a weekend).

                                          wow, odd! i have always had good food there, and almost never been seated without a wait on a weekend. i wonder if something has changed? their yelp reviews seem pretty polarized when i took a peek just now. oh well, i live in downtown seattle now anyway, so i just go to harbor city!

                          1. Dim sum - how late and what day?

                            I've gone to Harbor City on a Sunday around 4 pm. Dim sum was ordered off a menu at this hour. The dim sum seemed freshly made. At least, I did not hear a "ding" from the kitchen. lol

                            1. Harbor City is the chronic and I think they have Dim Sum till 10 pm

                              1. Harbor city is the fire! Also Samurai noodle is good for cheap ramen
