Cheap and Cheerful Dim Sum in Markham

I am looking for a cheap and good dim sum place in Markham. We love the Casa's but sometimes we just want a lunch that is easier on the wallet. Any thoughts? Early Birds are fine too but looking mostly for lunch.

  1. Emperor is cheaper. Not on the same level as Casa's and Yangs, but tasty none the less.

Thank you Sadistick...looking for something more easterly...in Markham or further east.

I heart Ding Tai Fung :)

I do like their soup dumplings very much. Looking for Cantonese though......

          1. re: magic

Ding Tai Fung is not that easy on the wallet and strictly speaking, not really the same kind of dim sum offered at Casa.
I know the traffic chaos is an issue but have you tried any of the offerings at Pacific Mall/Market Village?
The place outside at the very far end of the parking lot, Ginger & Onion and the one inside Market Village, Mui Garden could suit your needs. Neither place is anything to look at, but the food is decent and the prices reasonable.

I'm a notorious cheapskate and even I have no issues with Ding Tai Fung's prices. Certainly compared to Casa they are cheap, my god!

And if not cheap - it's certainly reasonable. And cheerful!

It's also in the area Torontotonto seemed to be looking in. In any case, I hope Torontotonto finds joy!

              1. re: magic

Are you comparing prices to other dimsum restaurants or are you comparing to what you would pay for a meal at a normal, non-chinese restaurant?

                1. re: szw

I've found Ding Tai Fung to be quite reasonable and comparable price-wise to most dim sum places I've been to. And it's certainly less expensive than Casa Imperial, and in Markham, as per the OP's requirements.

That said, I'm all ears if there are any recs that are less expensive than Ding Tai Fung!

              2. re: sweetie

The traffic is not an issue at Pacific mall when you can navigate the Ding Tai Fung parking lot :0 I have seen Ginger and Onion and have never gone in as well as the Mui Garden...worth a try. Thanks.

It is not in Markham. But I find Landmark at Vic Park/McNcoil is cheap and good

        2. Often overlooked or unaware off, 'Chili Secrets' on Leslie north of Hwy#7 is a Northern cuisine outfit that serves Cantonese Dim Sum and some Northern fare lunch time!! very cheap by Richmond Hill/Markham standard and depending on what one orders, some dim sums are very good!

Emperor, though has early bird as well as daily specials, could be 'hit and miss'!

Ding Tai Fung is purely Northern'Shanghai style. Last time I ate there, only the XLB is passable. The rest of what we ordered were sub-par. IMHO, a really over-rated establishment!!

Good quality and prices -vince at kennedy and denison (ginger and onion location). I think it's $2.40 or so for s/m/l all day except holidays. Plus they have lunch noodle specials. Steamed shrimps on rice in a bamboo basket for $9 or so.
Another one is full house at midland and finch. $2.30 or all day. Sister restaurant of casa imperial but lower end market.
Both not fine dining but cheap tasty dim sum good value.

            1. re: caitlink

Had lunch at Full House. Restaurant was dirty, washroom even worse. Had staples of Wu Gok, Har Gow, Sui Mai, and Rice Flour roll. Very disappointing. Wu Gok had a medicinal taste...almost ammonia like, Har Gow were all broken and skin had a dirty water odour, Sui Mai was ok, Rice Flour roll was all rice flour roll and no beef at all. Maybe new ownership? Cannot be related to Casa's. My search continues.

Wow!! That sounded BAD!!!! Thanks for the heads up. Will avoid!!

                1. re: Torontotonto

That's too bad. I have not been in awhile. Can't say about the new ownership. But when I was there the last time and looked at the signage, was under impression they are affiliated with Casa Imperial and Victoria.
                  Sorry about the rec :-)

                  1. re: caitlink

Please dont be sorry about the rec....sometimes it works sometimes not. I have recommended restaurants in the past and they were closed when people got there :)

                    1. re: Torontotonto

Tried out Vince today. As advertized caitlink! Food was cheap and cheerful.....not the best I have had but very decent indeed. A good everyday stop. I was a little worried after reading some Yelp and Urbanspoon reviews about the bad service but we were very pleasantly surprised. Har Gow was good, Rice Flour roll was very generous with the bbq pork, Duck was very well seasoned....not too much 5 spice, and the bok choy well prepared. Thanks!!

I like this place a lot...Chile Secrets...was my regular spot for a while. Pretty good dimsum and its really nice they have some special northern dishes which are very good IMO. Last time I went (a year ago) I think prices were like 2.80 for S/M/L? Bonus...the restaurant is very nice as well. Like 10x nicer than standard Chinatown spadina restaurants!

                1. re: Charles Yu

The last time I went for dim sum at Chili Secrets they had stopped doing it and only had Shanghai dishes. Have they brought dim sum back again? It was one of my go to good dim sum for cheap places.

                  1. re: theel

I thought they had stopped too....earlier this year. A bit of a trend going on. "I Cook" in Markham also stopped dim sum (Cantonese) this year. The dim sum war casualties I thought. But if Chilli Secrets has restarted....

                    1. re: theel

I haven't been in over a year. This makes me sad!
