The Ginger Man (Albany)

  • 2

We went to The Ginger Man recently. The Fall decorations added to the warmth. Irish authors and book covers are showcased on the walls and a shamrock adorns a column. The atmosphere was lively. Service was excellent (thanks, Michael). Now on to the food:

We started with proseco and the charcuterie plate (thanks, unagi1). Our three selections included: the truffled mousse pate, foie gras pate and smoked trout (accompanied with horseradish). Served with crackers, bread and Ginger Man Blend Cheese.

APPETIZERS

Croquettes - Three large, round meatball size croquettes filled with goat cheese and chive surrounded by a sauce of truffled garlic cream and basil oil. Crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.

Cheese fondue - Aged Irish cheddar and Guinness with toasted garlic bread. Addictive. Fresh apples would make a great additional accompaniment.

ENTREES

SO had the grilled Angus Burger (8 oz. house ground Angus short rib) an a toasted brioche bun with all the trimmings. SO ordered this because he likes brioche and it wasn't really brioche. He enjoyed his burger. Served with fries. Took half home.

They have several vegetarian options. I was deciding between:

*Coconut curry quinoa - grilled eggplant, roast mushrooms, fried spinach over lemongrass quinoa toasted with a red curry coconut sauce
*Chicken with jalapeno (read mixed reviews on Yelp)
*Crispy half duck with ginger raspberry compote and Basmati rice

Nearby diners had the chicken with jalapeno and lobster roll, paella. Plates looked really good.

The duck sliders are no longer on the menu.

I ended up having the beet sliders (appetizer special) and they were delicious. The owner suggested I add the pickles (on the side), which I did. She was spot on. Thinly sliced beets, baby arugula, onion, goat cheese, with a lavender ? on little toasted brioche buns (not really brioche). Delicious. Nothing left to take home.

Another diner had the veal cheeks wrapped in bacon (special). So tender she cut them with a butter knife. She also ended up taking half home.

We finished with espresso. SO had a chocolate/guinness, chocolate sauce dessert.

A really good experience.

There is parking behind the restaurant.

Glad we ventured to Albany. Still want to try DP and Cafe Madison. Also return to NWBB, Grappa '72, The Wine Bar on Lark and Yono's.
