  1. We don't often recommend Toqué (or other high-end restaurants) except when asked for high-end.

You can get a couple of good dishes at places like
Hotel Herman, Pastaga, Le Comptoir, Le Petit Alep.

La Salle à Manger, Maison Publique, Mezcla, Lawrence (maybe closer to $30), Laloux, ...

Have a look at this list :

Max is entirely correct about this: many of the restaurants that get mentioned on this board falls into the $20-30 main category. His suggestions are perfect, but also consider Quartier General, EVOO, Tuck Shop, Bouillon Bilk, (the latter pushing your upper limit).

Don't forget Les 3 Petits Bouchons!

Le Quartier général tends towards the upper end too, but it is a byow, which is a significant saving. You will find the menu at their website, which can help you choose wine to take there:

There is absolutely NOTHING vegetarian on their proposed menu though. I mention this because an annual family dinner includes a vegetarian cousin... and some hardcore carnivores.

QG maxes out at just over $40 for 4 courses... I'd certainly consider that to easily fall within the $20-30 main requirement, even if the mains list individually for $27-31. I've said it before and I'll say it again - QG is one of the greatest bargains in Montreal. Period.
