Fresh porcini mushrooms -- are they ANYWHERE around?

It's wild mushroom season and some of the hard-to-find wild varieties are starting to show up here and there. Word is that Phillips' Woodlands store in Kennett Square will have fresh lobster mushrooms and chantrelles tomorrow. But it's fresh porcini mushrooms I'm craving. Has anyone seen any recently?

  1. You might check with mainly mushrooms who sell out of Doylestown farmers market among other places. They have a facebook page

        Interesting. I checked today with Wegmans in Malvern and Downingtown and came up with nothing. Maybe each store carries different produce.

          Nope -- none there according to the store's produce manager.

        2. Last week at the RTM Iovine's had porcini, chantrelle, lobster and honeycap mushrooms.

            I was at Iovine's yesterday and there was only one container of moldy porcinis - I passed.

              They really do horrible job of packaging their mushrooms - you pretty much always have to look out for that there, but if you get there on the right day (the day they put them out) they're fine..

                Sometimes if you talk to one of the Iovines you can get them from the back. I have had conversations with them about mushroom packaging and they know it doesn't work, but they say they dry out in the old open packs

          2. Not to na na nih na na my hometown but was in the Haute Pyrenees this last weekend and found beautiful cepes, the same mushroom but in France at 15 euros/kg and chanterelle at 8 euros/kg.
            They were wonderful.

              Last weekend I returned from a trip to Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Veneto region and fresh porcini mushrooms were everywhere -- in every market and on every menu. And yes, they were wonderful. :-)

                  No. But after an up-close-and-personal visit with the wine growers, I did bring back some Bele Casel DOCG Prosecco Colfondo -- just last week presented with an award as one of the 50 best wines of Italy. Much more in keeping with my budget, too.

                    ...there were a number of bottles I would have loved to tote home -- just not possible.

                2. You might check out I've bought fresh porcinis there, as well as other types and they've been wonderful.

                    I just checked their website. They've got porcini dried and frozen, but I didn't see any fresh.
