We're just back from 16 days in Italy starting with 3 nights in Orvieto, which may have been the food highlights of the trip. Night 1 was I Sette Consoli, which was excellent -- a lovely tenderloin and vegetable napopoleon was delicious, as was a fish gillet on eggplant puree and topped tih tomtoes and tiny fried eggplant cubes. The big discovery of the trip was Trattoria Mezza Luna, which makes a wonderful, wonderful carbonara which was the highlight of the trip. The crostini there also were excellent. An omelet was not. We also had a tartufo extravaganza at Palomba and good meals at trattoria dell'orso and trattoria del moro. A porchetta at enoteca al duomo was surprisingly good. We also f\developed a taste for Orvieto classico, which seems to taste better there anywhere else. With good food, a beautiful duomo and a maze of streets in wiich it is lovely to get lost, Orvieto was the perfect place to start our trip.
