[Galax] Galax Smokehouse

It’s an award winning BBQ located in the downtown area. A real local place for local people but also happy to feed visitors to the Friday night gig at the Rex Theatre across the road.

Chopped beef brisket formed the centrepiece of one plate and pulled pork the other. They came with bread and hushpuppies and the choice of two sides. Both were OK but a bit dry and a bit underflavoured. Truth be told, we’d eaten better on this trip.

What were particularly good, however, were the table sauces – four of them, all made on the premises. A particularly zingy tomato and vinegar based is the recipe of the local police chief. Hope he’s as good at catching the bad guys as he is at sauce creation.

Banana pudding seems to be the only dessert offered in BBQ places and I’ve always been too full to try it before this meal. It wasn’t something I’d be in a rush to order again. It was really just an overly sweet sloppy mousse affair with banana stirred through and topped with “squirty” cream.

It’s probably unfair to comment on a town when you’ve only spent a couple of days there, but Galax does seem to be a bit of a shithole. There’s bright spots – like a farmers market, but it was small and there were no customers. And the Friday night music gig at the Rex Theatre was great (and the reason we had come to town). But it’s still a bit of a shithole – with its small downtown area where many premises were empty or just closed. And a small trailer park on the immediate outskirts of downtown. Now I know from foody shitholes – I live in borough of some 220K and, by way of restaurants in our central area, there’s only a couple of mediocre all-you-can-buffets. At least we have a few decent places to eat in the outer suburbs. That doesn’t seem to be the same for Galax. There’s a “main drag” leading out of town with a few of the chains – McD and the like. And the occasional independent. Which is why, on our second night, the best option was also a buffet, And, no, I’m not going to tell you anything about it. You don’t want to eat there, do you?

(OK, the buffet was Porky’s and, for buffet, it wasn’t at all bad.)
