I just returned from a delightful weekend in your beautiful city with my grandchildren(18 and 23). We all had a ball and much of that is thanks to all the fine advice I was given.
After all the talk about Oakland restaurants, we chose Sidestreet, a great choice, for Pho (pronounced "Fuh" I found out) and the food was a great way to start the vacation.
Dinner was at Perbacco where everyone agreed my ravioli with squash blossoms was the winner of the night.
The next day (Sunday) we had a late breakfast at Cafe de la Presse which was right across from our hotel and then headed for the opera at the War Memorial which was the highlight of our trip.
Dinner was the best of all at Farallon. We all flipped for the place. After that post of a few weeks ago dissing all the noise and slow service, etc. we were astonished at how quiet it was (much more so than Perbacco). And the food was deelish along with fine service.
Two days before the grands arrived we started our private time at La Folie the first night and really were very happy with our choice. Yes, it is an upscale but definitely not pretentious place with superlative service to go with the creative menu. This place was not at all cheap but we have never minded spending more for value and fine service, and being that it was our anniversary, we felt we deserved to pamper ourselves. We chose the right place.
The next evening we dined at Kokkari. MY mate was thrilled with his meal. I, however, was less so. We have a Greek seafood restaurant (Estia) in Philly which I felt was far superior to this one.
Thank you all again for your help.
We even toasted to you for your suggestions that made our trip such a delicious one.

I'm glad you had such a great time. Just to clarify for people, since you mentioned Oakland, Sidestreet Pho is in Alameda.
