Comida Feliz on Central Avenue in Yonkers

A few years ago, my husband was teaching guitar to a student who had difficulty paying for lessons. On occasion, his mom would bring over these meat- or cheese-stuffed fried pies (sort of like empanadas) called pastelitos as a "thank you." Let me tell you, that was one heck of a "thank you." The lessons eventually stopped, as did the pastelitos.

Well, now we can get them from Comida Feliz. This place opened up next to Carvel in Yonkers, replacing a pizza parlor that we never bothered to visit. I may be wrong, but I think the food has a Dominican influence. The house-made pastelitos seem to be baked rather than fried, but the crust is deliciously thin and crispy. The fillings (beef, chicken, or cheese) are well-seasoned and generous. Each one is $1.50. We fight over them.

I'm sitting here now with a plate of shredded beef with (pigeon) peas and rice. The beef tastes like it was slow-cooked until it literally fell apart and is mixed with sauteed onions and green olives. It was about $8 for a good-sized portion, enough to fill you up for lunch with some left over for a midnight snack. We have also enjoyed their beef stew, chicken with peppers, rice with black beans, and maduros. Today's specials included the shredded beef, oxtails, and stewed chicken.

Although we've only been there for take-out, there is space to eat in. Whenever I call, the service is impeccable, all of my questions are answered, and I feel like I'm getting a quality product from someone who cares about what they are making and serving. My husband swears he saw an abuela cooking in the back. Don't you love that?

Ha, "loaded fries" sounds like a must try. Con queso, of course.

We've never tried the fries and pizzas. There is so much other great stuff that distracts us.

I've noticed that place as I've driven by. Thank's for the write up.

My pleasure. Thank you for the recommendation of Nueva Puebla a while back. We've gotten a lot of great meals from them.
