Major Foodie Find in Burlington VT: Misery Loves Company --for Dinner! 10/1/13
If you or friends consider yourselves Foodies, passionate adventurous eaters, then I will suggest that ASAP, you hustle yourselves down to Misery Loves Company in Winooskie, 5 minutes from Burlington. I already raved about their lunch:
but their Supper menu is much bigger and even more unusual, and changes daily.
What makes it hard to adequately describe the food is the many unusual components (almost all house-made) and the myriad descriptions needed to do justice to the talented chefs.
A few examples: smoked yoghurt! hyssop in 38 hour roasted lamb; octopus and dorade were the seafood specials tonight! We tried 7 different small plates tonight and every plate was a winner.
Our favs were the:
-- Corn 'Pudding' topped with deep fried egg and foraged mushrooms
--Wood grilled octopus with heirloom legumes and smoked yoghurt
--Lamb loin w/ sweet and sour eggplant, fried cauliflower and more....
-- Fluke Crudo over spaghetti squash with pepita brittle and more....
-- Rich chocolate pudding with coffee milk jam and candied hazelnuts
The dining room is simple and comfortable, about 25 seats inside (plus bar seating) and 25 sidewalk umbrella table seats. No reservations. Asian, Turkish, French, Southern U.S., etc. influences, menus that do NOT adequately describe these imaginative and beautifully executed dishes; a 'no food rules' kind of open culinary attitude, modest low-key chef/owners, good portioning and fair pricing, as well as a fun relaxed atmosphere and casual informed welcoming service. What a thrill!
It's pretty new but word has really spread and it is very popular, full at 7:30PM on a Tuesday.
p.s. If you become a major fan of MLC and you find yourself in Boston for a visit, make sure to hit up Strip T's in Watertown (near Harvard Square) a true philosophical sibling to MLC.
