Republic in Berkley [MI]

Opened just two weeks ago (soft opening, I'm pretty sure.) Stopped in to take a look - it's small but very nice; all wood tables and old fashioned chairs, attractive small bar. Anybody chowed there yet? They're owned by Mitch's, who has had fab ribs for years.

None of the mapping sites know about it. Nothing on Yawn. uSpoon finds Republica: http://www.republicaberkley.com

Some sites might still think it's the BBC (Berkley Bistro and Cafe), which it was until a couple of years ago. I'm glad they upgraded the spot, the old owner let it fall into disrepair (my kid worked there for a while)

I'm looking forward to trying it.

1999 Coolidge, just north of 11 mile - used to be Berkley Breakfast Club.

I'm assuming this is different than Public in Ferndale? All these new restaurants sound exactly the same!!!

I went last week with a friend. Sadly, we both ordered the same thing so I can't give too much of a review of the menu. We started with the Tomato-Fennel soup...it was so thick you almost could have used a fork. It made me happy that they weren't selling a watered down soup. The taste was great, although a little too hot but served in a coffee cup so it couldn't cool off well. It came with a slice of baguette on top that had been grilled with some sprinkled Parmesan. We also ordered the Beet and Arugula salad...it was a bit pricey at $12, I think, but very tasty and had blue cheese and nuts. The dressing was light and not overpowering. The amount of roasted beets in this salad was amazing. I would go back, although it's a little far from Rochester for lunch, and I would even order the same thing again.

I seem to remember my friend saying something about it. I think they had a drink menu, but since I was there for lunch I didn't really pay attention.

We were there Saturday and they are serving now...nice small wine list, a good choice of local and microbrews. Burger was a burger, like the brioche roll, fries and excellent! Rib taster is really good as are ribs. Mixed reviews on the tomato soup/grilled cheese combo - our dining companions gave it a B- --soup way too thick, sandwich nothing special. Service was very nice and it's a cozy, cool place. Hey, anything cool come to Berkley is huge!

NOTE: Name is Republica, no Republic. (And god forbid not republican).

Had their lamb burger and the bacon/kale/tomato/duck sandwich. Both items were very good.
