Under The Table/new dining in Cabbagetown

I just enjoyed a very cheap, very cheerful, and very tasty meal in a basement in Cabbagetown. Chef Betty definitely can cook!

Under The Table (568B Parliament, just south of Wellesley) is straightforward home cooking/comfort food and a wonderful alternative to cooking in. It's decorated in early rec room, so perhaps not a good choice for a first date or as a destination, but with food this good I don't care about the decor. It's clean and comfortable, and the service is friendly and efficient, but it is not licensed yet.

There is a full brunch/breakfast menu with no exotic flavours, and of course burgers, wraps, sandwiches and chicken wings, but for dinner today's soups (made fresh daily in house) were Jamaican Chicken or Seafood Gumbo, and the special was ginger crabs with a 10 oz. rib eye, starch and salad....for $19!!

Friends of ours swear by the meatloaf with garlic mashed and the spaghetti bolognese, but we had 2 gumbos, jerk chicken, greek salad, and are eager to try all of the dinner choices, a strange mix (Kung Pao Chicken? Oxtail? Ackee and Saltfish? )of what the cook considers comfort food.

Worth a visit, and worth every penny.

Don't take my word for it...see the eight reviews on Yelp.

Hope they will get licensed soon.
