El Cortijo, Burlington VT Mexican
I love this place, the decor and the helpful smiling friendly waitstaff. But I would feel so much better recommending it if it served consistently delicious food. As it is, i can rec the tortilla soup, the brunch special taco of soft scrambled eggs, cilantro, cheese and house bacon, the really unusual super veggie tacos of kale, sweet potato and pepitas, and of green beans, zucchini and cheese; the side salad with a bright citrus dressing; and the top flight chili verde sauce. They even griddle their beautiful corn tortillas to add some crisp and chew- fantastic! But I ask you, how can a kitchen with these talents also put out an ugh off-tasting guajillo sauce and the blandest refried beans (or was that cardboard?) you will ever put to your lips? I mean, just because you serve alot of vegans doesn't mean you can't use onion, garlic, veggie stock and spices and SALT for heaven's sake. sigh.
And what IS it w/ the crummy website? They've been serving brunch all along but WHERE do they give you a brunch menu (even if it's a sample) ? I know they've been growing; i know they have alot of irons in the fire, but I say get your current house in order first. Focus on improving the flavors of the beans and all those tacos I cannot recommend.... And while you're at it, get rid of those g....d...d flies!
