National Curry Week 2013 -> Oct 7 -13 - Your assistance is requested

Hi there,

So I'm excited to learn that this event falls during my visit. (I think! I searched to see if others had posted about it in past years and came up empty handed)

I'm staying in Kensington and see a few suggestions for London's SW at the event site. Are any of these spots worth a visit and do any offer a good take-away service? I'll be working long hours but would love to take a taxi from the office to pick up a lovely curry to take home for dinner.

Here are the spots recommended at the website:

The Cinnamon Club The Old Westminster Library
Great Smith Street SW1
Mint Leaf Suffolk Place, Pall Mall SW1
Mango & Silk 199 Upper Richmond Road West SW14
Ma Goa 244 Upper Richmond Road SW15

Here's the event site for anyone interested:

  1. The only one on the list I've been to is The Cinnamon Club. I think some people don't like that restaurant because the food is a 'twist' on traditional Indian food, but I love the dining room and the food was just fine. I'm sure they don't do any take-away.

Search the names here in the search box or try,uk for some reviews.

    1. These restaurants on the list are all highly thought of by this crew on Chowhound.

Trishna 15-17 Blandford Street W1 ; Indian Zing 236 King Street ; Moti Mahal 45 Great Queen Street WC2

      1. You may wish to take some of the participating restaurants with a pinch of salt.

Certainly Cafe Spice Namaste is excellent and I could thoroughly recommend it. But, when I note that there is only one place listed outside of "the south", I wonder a bit what's going on. Particularly as I know that restaurant well and it is only a high street curry house - a good one, yes, but nothing at all out of the ordinary.

Better to search the board a little.

Did we see the same list? The one I saw at that link had restaurants all over the country.

            Mea culpa.

There is indeed a list from all over the country. Just above it, there's "Curry Night Pubs" and I had assumed that it was a heading for what followed, so I didnt read it. I know several of them and, whilst most are still in the "high street curry house" category, they are at the top end of the category.

              Alles klar... you're forgiven.

Btw - I'd love to know where you were in the States and what good eats you found.

Nashville first then slowly north through North Carolina to northern Virginia, then back to Atlanta. I'm typing up reviews at present and will post to the relevent boards in a few days. Generally, pretty good eats - but then, as we know, prior research is everything. There were a number of small towns where there wasnt much review information online, or in the guidebooks, about restaurants, so much was decided by looking at online menus for places.

John, you saw a lot of America that I never have. Other than Northern Virginia, I've missed your other destinations, although my ex has now lived in NC for a long time so my kids get there. I find it wonderful that so many menus appear now online. It sure helps in the planning. I'll look at the other boards in a bit after you've done some posting.

        2. Ma Goa is actually pretty good, although I have not been in a couple of years. However, it is as quick to get to most of the central restaurants from Ken as it is to Putney and there are some good ones listed below.

I quite like the Cin. Club as well, also I had a decent well in Cin. Soho fairly recently.

          1. That is a truly awful website.

I'd just go eat curry and ignore this sham 'event.'
