Solstice, Stowe Mountain Lodge, Stowe VT

We had a really sweet anniversary dinner (23 years) at Solstice at the Stowe Mountain Lodge.

The service was outstanding. We got an amuse that was interesting and light and tasty (cucumber and something and liquid and ginger with a little round, maybe a pepper, I don't know but damn it was nice) and they gave us complimentary champagne. Not only did our waiter and our servers (note the plural form) know it was our anniversary and wish us a lovely evening, the house manager came over and wished us well, too. I'd originally had reservations for yesterday (the actual day of our anniversary) but had changed them, and in the note for the change using Open Table, I mentioned this fact. The house manager brought it up when he was congratulating us, making it clear that he'd READ the note. That they bothered to remember and mention it, let alone bring us some nice bubbly to celebrate are both nice little touches that made us (well me, I can't speak for my husband) feel special and cared for. This is only the second restaurant we've been in here (in Vermont), where the service has been this warm and thoughtful. The other place was Trattoria Delia (also an anniversary dinner). Most other places don't even mention the special event, or remember your names unless you ask them to make a big deal out of it.

I had a roast duck breast and Frank had a roast pork glazed with maple syrup and pepper (I think). I was surprised at how "low" priced the entrees were for the location. Both our mains were under $30. I think mine was $28. This place has valet parking, for cry sakes! IN VERMONT!!!

The breast was perfect with a gorgeous layer of crisp fat on top and a fluffy, creamy polenta that I really liked.

We shared a cider and strawberry sorbet for dessert (they wrote out "happy anniversary" in dark chocolate on the plate) that was WONDERful. It was really cidery and not too sweet.

We had an app of burrata with... here lemme get the description from the menu it's SO... "Maplebrook Farms Burrata|Tomato Confit|Prosciutto Powder|Grilled Bread|Balsamic “Pearls”" see what I mean? But it was delicious.

The atmosphere is what you'd expect at the main fine dining restaurant of an upscale ski resort during peak season. The view out the window (and they placed us at the window) was fantastic. We always eat very early, so there weren't any other diners around us. I think they deliberately didn't seat anyone near us until we were ready to go, but that wasn't hard because it was still really early and they weren't filling up rapidly.

Neither of us had anything else to drink other than the water, and our total bill was $100 with tip. So 1 app, 2 mains, 1 dessert. I highly recommend this place as a special event or fine dining experience. :)
