Heavy Duty Rye Bread

Just read an article in New York magazine about the rise of heavy duty (emphasis on heavy and chewy) rye bread purveyors in my former home town. Not talking Jewish Rye -- this stuff is Nordic-influenced with at least 50%, if not more, rye grains. Any places in the DC area baking such treats?

  1. Well, it's not quite the same thing, but The Swiss Bakery makes a great German sourdough rye:

    You buy it by the pound...and it's fairly dense.

      + 1. We've bought this bread (and others from Swiss) at the Vienna's farmers' market on Saturday mornings. I don't like all their breads, but they tend to do the dense ones pretty well.

    2. Heidelberg makes some great rye breads. Not wimpy at all.

        Oh yeah, this one should put some hair on one's chest:

        Volkorn Rye
        Heavy, hearty sour dough. Whole grain rye, sourdough, wheat gluten, yeast and salt.

          Heidelberg also has hamantaschen year-round and an impressive array of marzipan treats.
