Volunteers for Cheese of the Month Coordinator (Oct '13 to March '14) Needed

Here's the new sign up list for Cheese of the Month Coordinator. Duties include selecting the particular cheese or cheeses for the month, and starting the thread. No experience (or expertise) required. We're all here to help!

As of now...

fldhkybnva has October

Ridge has November

We still need to fill:

Any volunteers?

  1. I don't know if we want to repeat volunteers since they get to make the ultimate decision for COTM. But, if there is an open month after others have had a chance to volunteer, I'm happy to take it. Excited to see COTM continue - even though I only comment sporadically, I usually do purchase the cheese and follow along with others' comments/experiences.

Wasn't meaning to step on any toes here. I'll step aside.

      1. re: Phoebe

I meant me!! I volunteered already for cheese of the month coordinator so I didn't want to jump in and call another month before others who might want have a cheese they are itching to discuss had a chance to volunteer! If we are having a problem filling one of the months I am happy to do it.

Sorry for the confusion - thank you for getting this kicked off.

        1. re: EmBrooks

I was holding off as well, I'm willing to do more than one month.

    2. I wish the CHOW Team would help promote COTM; place this info on the Blog so more people would see it.

Yea I feel like wicked step child. Who doesn't like cheese?

      2. Looking forward to the kick off of October and bumping this thread in the hopes more CH's will volunteer to cover a month still open.

Is that a nudge, HIllJ? October is in the works, to be posted verrryy shortly :)

          1. re: fldhkybnva

Glad to hear it. The nudge rec'd in Sept when it was my turn to cover was much appreciated...consider this, sharing the cheese-love.

        2. Hi Phoebe, could you please drop me an email to the address in my profile? I have an idea to bounce off you privately.

          1. In anticipation of Ridge kicking off what sounds to be an interesting Nov Cheese of the Month experience, I'm giving this thread a boost in the hopes more CH's will volunteer Dec-March,

            Calling all cheese lovers!

I'm not sure if I'm allowed again, but if there is a month and someone is needed I'm willing. It doesn't matter when. I had a great time with October.

              1. re: fldhkybnva

It's been a fun read, fldh! Thanks for contributing.

                1. re: fldhkybnva

You did an awesome job! You stayed on top of the topic and sewed it all together. I don't think I will be as good. Too unorganized.

                  1. re: Ridge

Let me know if you need me. I can do January if no one has volunteered or doesn't want to do it when it rolls around.

                    1. re: Ridge

Gosh, I hope you don't feel that way, Ridge. The Cheese of the Month is all about having a good time. No test follows :)

                        1. re: fldhkybnva

Okay, you can take my tests for me! You're hired!

                        2. re: HillJ

We certainly are having fun this month. Lots of good participation and discussion.

                          1. re: Ridge

It's been a great cheese-ride since the launch of Cheese of the Month. Every volunteer has been generous of time and I've learned a great deal in the process. I hope more CH's step up and volunteer.

                  2. Just wondering if the Cheese of the Month has a volunteer for December?

I did 2 of the first 6 months, and I don't want to Bogart the cheese board, but I'm a willing candidate.

                      1. re: Veggo

Gosh, I didn't realize you had covered two already. Thanks again for your contributions, V.

I only bumped the thread in the hopes newcomers and/or the cheese board crowd, might show up and volunteer over the next few months.

I've been reading your recent cheese reviews with great interest.

                        1. re: HillJ

                          C'MON, CHEESE MICE!

                          SQUEAK UP!

                      2. re: HillJ

I will certainly help out in any way. I will be traveling out the country for the last two weeks though and may have sketchy internet access. If Veggo wants to do December I can do January. Do we have a theme for December yet? I remember we were thinking about holiday cheeseplates?

                        1. re: Ridge

Ridge, you were kind enough to volunteer to oversee the next six months re: volunteers. Once volunteers commit, they typically select the discussion theme for that month.

I was only hoping to help you jump start some new coverage.

Whatever works for anyone with time to volunteer, is more than fine by me.

                            1. re: Veggo

Generous of you Veggo. By doing so, now Dec & January (Ridge volunteered) have coverage.

                              Thank you!

                                1. re: Melanie Wong

Ah it appears they both have. Great!
                                  Coverage for Dec, Jan, Feb?

                                  1. re: HillJ

No worries, I can take February!

                                    1. re: EmBrooks

Oh you're all terrific. Thanks everyone. I look forward to learning a great deal more over the next few months.

                      3. I cannot do December - we are still traveling and I would not be able to start the thread until next week. I'll take January.

                        1. Bumping this thread for CH's that volunteered a few months going forward.

                          Thank you all!

                          1. Good morning, would someone like to volunteer for March?

I can't take March bc I'll be out of town most of the month, but I'll take April, if you like.

                              1. re: ChefJune

                                Thanks to both of you.

                                March -- fldhykybnva

                                1. re: Melanie Wong

Is the nominations thread still going?

                                  1. re: Melanie Wong

Melanie, is there a list somewhere of ALL the cheeses that have been reviewed and tasted thus far? I'm getting confused by all the "Suggestion Lists." Since my participation has been sporadic thus far, I'd like to know what's already been done, so as not to repeat.

                                    1. re: ChefJune

Equally frustrating and daunting is where to score the cool stuff, within a 3 county radius for many of us.

                                      1. re: Veggo

Veggo, I'm sure that's a reality for many who would like to participate more fully on this board. It could be helpful if you could nominate a few things that might be worth trying that you find at your local grocery stores. Perhaps you could set up a new thread for nomination for the next 12-month period ala these that have expired. Then add to it as the mood strikes you.

Then, does someone want to set up a new volunteer sign up thread as Phoebe did for this one?

                                        1. re: Melanie Wong

Melanie, I hope Don Shirer will volunteer. There are so many hounds more knowledgeable about cheese than me. I did 2 months of the first year as COTM administrator and we welcome other participants.
I have exhausted my local grocery stores, but I still have lots of cool mail order from Hook's in Wisconsin. For the sexy cheese not available within driving distance, mail order is the way to go. Maybe reliable mail-order sources could be a worthwhile topic.

                                          1. re: Veggo

Veggo, I understand the feeling though that's not what I requested.

The Cheese of the Month discussions have been administered through two threads. One that solicits volunteer sign-ups (such as this one from 10/13 to 3/14) and a second that asks for nominations (earlier past two examples linked above in my earlier post to you). As can be seen from the dates in the titles, both have expired though we eked out an April ChOTM thanks to ChefJune. My post was intended as a reminder that it's time for new requests with appropriate subject headings for volunteers and cheeses as potential topics to be set up.

If no one feels like renewing, then I guess we're done with this series. It takes me more time to make these reminders each time and to deal with back-room emails than to do it myself. I guess I feel that if the community can't organize itself, I'm done pushing.

                                            1. re: Melanie Wong

I enjoy COTM but have hoped for more participation. Let's try to keep it going if there is enough interest. If not we can let it lapse for a few months and try to revive it again. I will be traveling next month and have some deadlines and projects converging at work so I can't organize May but will still try and participate.

                                              1. re: Ridge

I enjoy it but it doesn't get much attention.

                                              2. re: Melanie Wong

I'm willing to set up for the next six months.

                                                1. re: Ruth Lafler

That would be awesome. Thanks Ruth.

                                                  1. re: Ruth Lafler

Thank you, Ruth, that would be great.

This might be a good time to take a minute to ask if there's anything we should change about the structure of Cheese of the Month now that we've been at it for more than a year. Any suggestions?

I might suggest that the time period for cheese nominations and for volunteers to sign up be extended to 12-months instead of six. At this point, they're not getting so many replies that they're cumbersome to open and read through, and that would cut down on our having to renew them as often.

                                                    1. re: Melanie Wong

I think it's probably better if the sign-up at six months. Since I started it, I'll take responsibility for prodding people. I agree about the nomination threads. Plus, they already have a lot of suggestions. I just picked on for this month's COTM.

                                                      1. re: Ruth Lafler

Thanks for keeping the (cheese) ball rolling, Ruth.

So, let's go with a 12-month nomination thread. Whoever starts it, please link up to the two previous threads as well.

                                          2. re: ChefJune

Ridge stepped up and posted a list here of past ChOTM themes,

You'd still need to open the discussion threads to see the specific cheeses, brands, ages, etc. that people tasted each month, if that's the level of detail that you're asking about.

                                      2. re: Melanie Wong

I can do March if no one else wants to.

                                        1. re: fldhkybnva

I will post a new thread tomorrow-March cheese of the month will be an Irish cheese plate
