New even more annoying ads?

  • 59
  • Share

Today I was quieting minding my own business reading down a long thread when BAM.... my screen suddenly is replaced with some ad I have to sit and wait for to close to get back to content. That's even more annoying than all the ad videos running on the side of the screen. Please don't say this is the way Chow is going now!

  1. I thought it was my computer doing something crazy again, but nope you just confirmed it. Click the back button to get rid of the offending ad. I figured it out after a couple.

    1. Is this on CHOW or Chowhound? I never go to Chow and haven't had the problem on CH.

      1. Does anyone remember what the ad was for? If you see it again please take a screen shot. We have a policy against ads like this on Chow and Chowhound and will block ads like this from getting through if we know where they are coming from.

Meshane, this is what I posted on another thread on the same topic: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/9158... - I did include the link that appeared in the menu bar when the invasive page appeared on the browser.

          1. re: ElsieDee

Mine was like this, but it was for some sort of survey.

          2. re: meshane

Just got one seconds ago. Lindt's chocolate with a 2 dollar off offer.

          3. Have you tried installing something like AdBlock? It is free software to block ads.

            1. Did it just happen or did you accidentally roll over the ad? I found on some sites that happens when my cursor wanders over an ad by accident.

Nope was just reading a chowhound thread. Not even touching the keyboard at the time

                1. re: Firegoat

This happened to me the other day too. I was on the bottom of the page, no ads in sight, just reading something; all of a sudden a man was talking about shopping at Lowes. With all the viruses out there, it scared the bejesus out of me.

                  1. re: coll

We also noticed that ad last night and have since had it removed. Please let us know if you see anything else like it.

As for the full-page ads that prompted this discussion, we're still working on tracking them down; our sincere apologies for the continued annoyance.

                      Thanks, will do!

                      1. re: Engineering

Hi, engineering guys... Are you aware that Google now has a new program that "auto-attaches" to all Google accounts (which come automatically if you use an Android based device or the Google search engine) that basically nails people in to accepting the pop-up ads unless you go to your Google account and manually opt out of their 'partner's advertising program," or whatever they call it.? Once I did that, my pop-up blockers started working again!

                        Just a thought....

                2. I'm just grateful that crazy looking woman they had in an ad awhile back is gone. I think I eventually used adblock to not see it anymore. She was scary.

Halloween is coming and I think the timing may be right for her making a comeback...

                          1. re: Servorg

As long as her photos continue to draw in millions and she uses some of that loot for the greater good, I'm not kicking CS to the curb-on Halloween or any other day.

But if Halloween opens a few doors.....who am I to judge :)

do you mean the Check Please Bay Area woman?

                      3. This ad has popped up on my iPhone four or five times in recent weeks. It freezes the screen.

                        1. This just happened to me for the first time.

I thought I had captured the screenshot, but apparently did not. It was a citrus juice ad, though I'm not sure of the brand.

                          1. Just had another one of these for Seattle's Best Coffee.

Didn't get a screenshot. These are SUPER obnoxious, and when you finally get to the page that you clicked on, all of the replies are minimized.

Seattle's Best Coffee here too. Damn! Very annoying, please do something to eliminate these intrusive ads.

                            2. This looks like the answer for all of your "annoying ad" relief needs http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/28/tech/ad...

                              1. I have never met such thing. Haha, maybe this is just happened once, but the ad is OK for me.

                                      1. don't you people have adblock on your device?

                                        1. Just happened again, on the L.A. board. It was an add for a new Mexican brand being sold at Vons.

That does, actually, thank you. We're continuing to investigate this issue, and have had a little more luck in reproducing the ads in question; we'll let you know once we have more information.

                                          2. Hi everyone. Our ad team has blocked this type of ad from the site so we hope you won't run into this kind of page disruption again. If you do, please let us know and, if you can, provide a screen shot.

                                            1. In the middle of reading this thread, the uploaded ad popped up to take over the screen on my iPhone.
                                              http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/920552

Unlike previously, one can navigate with the back arrow to get away from it. Still hate pop ups the come up in the middle of reading a thread.

ARCO ad just popped again while I was scrolling through the middle of my profile page. Nothing nearby that I could have accidentally clicked on to make it appear, only thread links.

I hope that pop-up ads on mobile are not a new trend for Chow.com.

                                              2. Just got another one of these. I couldn't get a screen shot, but I did capture the url.

                                                1. On my iPhone, the AppCenter opens every time certain ads appear on the chowhound pages. This is happening more than a dozen times per hour of reading, and I'm not inclined to open the site any more on mobile if this continues.

I'm not touching anything on the screen when it happens, and in fact the ad is not even in the viewable portion when the screen is hijacked to the AppCenter. Only when I return to my browser and scroll to the top of the page do I see it.

This happening to me too! If I get taken to the App Center one more time, I may lose my mind. It's for all different games, in my case.

I first noticed it yesterday though it was happening with less frequency and I thought I might have inadvertently tapped something on the screen. I took a screen shot anyway.

But starting this morning, it's vicious!

Me too. This App Store thing is near constant today. I don't want to look at Chowhound on my phone anymore. :-(

                                                        1. re: DeborahL

I'll mention that the first time I started viewing this morning on my iPhone, a dialog box popped up that said something like, Do you want to open the AppStore page? I clicked on "no", and did not get hijacked that time. But the dialog box never came up again. If an interim solution is needed while you try to fix this, that dialog box was not perfect, but still less intrusive.

                                                      3. Yes. WTF is that all about.

I'm scrolling through a thread and it switches me to a buying a game in the iPhone App Store.

                                                            2. Wellness dog food; November 21, 3 PM MST, jumped right in while I was reading a post.

                                                              1. I think I have an ad issue but can't be sure! It may be a battle between my blocker and some other force, because half the main page here for the forums is now blank and I have to scroll way down the page to get to the threads.

                                                                1. I don't have a smartphone. I read CH on my laptop. I do not know how to take a screenshot or what Internet Explorer or Firefox or Chrome are. I have AOL on a dial-up connection. I never get any of this type of ad. Guess ignorance is bliss, in this case.

                                                                  1. Maybe it's a Friday the 13th thing, but a "Don't pay for T-Mobil .........." ad touting some other phone service just popped into the middle of a very long thread I was reading. Most maddening part is after exiting the ad, all replies are grey so there is no way to know what is new without scrutinizing the dates. !@#$%^&*!!! Enough already!

                                                                    1. First time in a while, but it did it again! Huge ad.... with a count down to when I could get to the site again. Needless to say, closed the window.

And yes, I know I could use an adblocker, but I understand the business model for a free website.

                                                                      Screen shot is attached.

                                                                      1. I installed AdBlocker a while back and haven't been troubled with _any_ads on this site ever since.
If the plugin ever stopped working, I'd probably be outta here.
