Midoh Japanese Kitchen (Rowland Heights) ...you had me at gyu tan

Leave it to the Japanese to convert me to beef tongue despite having many versions of it in taco form. For what ever reason I've never had a lengua taco that was as flavorful and beefy as prepared in a Japanese venue. I first fell in love with it at Mushu where it was served raw with a minituare grill with bincho coals and it was divine, and ever since then it's something I consistently order at Tsujita whenever I'm there for dinner (and completely went apesh!t over when they had a seasonal beef stew made with cubes of tongue).

While in the area I found Midoh Japanese Kitchen via Yelp with over 4+ star rating, much of it praising their gyu-tan, which is a steak of beef tongue served with demi glace. Midoh can be described as a Japanese cafe style restaruant (much in the same vein as Hong Kong style cafe restaurants) where there's a mixture of eastern and western influences in their dishes. Their gyu-tan steak exemplifies this philosophy. First of all I've never had a gyu-tan in steak form, which was prepared by having its outer skin layer removed, then seared, then cut into a little over an inch in thickness, sides seared, and braised. The beauty of this is that the texture changes depending where you slice...from tender and flaky...to buttery and melt in your mouth. The demi was rich and had a nice level of acidity that was a great foil to the richness of the beef. Served with rice, I scarfed down the entire thing rather quickly. Also their sides...couple of steamed baby carrots, fried bean sprouts, and seasoned fries, were all equally prepared properly and served as minor palette cleansers so as to not have the richness of the beef overwhelm you.

That being said, some of the other items on the menu are typical Japanese fair including a lot of katsu and curry items. Honestly nothing else really interested me. I'm only here for the tongue. If you find yourself out of options in the Rowland Heights area, stop by. Located in the back corner of Diamond Plaza.

Nice report. I'm almost never near ESGV so I may not have an opportunity to try this place, but I love the ox tongue at Tsujita.
