Bhojan - new location
I checked out the new location, 5901 Hillcroft where Sabri Nihari used to be. The funky homeliness (?) of the old location is gone, this is a more impersonal setting. There is now a chat bar where you can order some chat items - things like the lassis, dabeli, etc.
The buffet is on a steam table now instead of the chafing dishes that were used before; gone are the stainless steel thalis and katoris, replaced by plastic plates that are slightly larger than a standard dinner plate and small plastic bowls. I guess the metal ones either melted in the fire or were not salvageable.
They used to be good about labeling the dishes that were offered so that if you could remember the name until you got home you could look the dish up and try to figure out what the heck you just ate, but there were missing labels, mislabeled items and some items were labeled only with the principal ingredient.
Puris and pappadum were available on the buffet; that's not a good arrangement, they need to be fresh. They still come around, though, throughout the meal with fresh rotis and poolan puris, my favorite.
When I first started going to Bhojan, many years ago, I read that Gujarati cuisine was considered the haute cuisine of vegetarianism and I could believe it - I was just blown away by the dishes. Then I thought they went downhill a bit. The food I had here is pretty much on a par with what I had my last couple of visits to the old location. Not bad by any means, just not all that special anymore. Sorry to have to say that and I'll still go from time to time, I'm sure.
Here’s a picture if you’d like to see, together with a description of the dishes.
