where to find mustard seed?

cherylmtl Sep 21, 2013 06:22 PM

I need several cups' worth of yellow mustard seed - where can I find that in Montreal? I have seen small spice containers of it, but I am looking for a place that sells a larger amount (ideally, not someplace where it's been sitting for years, either). Any suggestions?

Spice Station on Bernard or Monkland? Or Anatol on St-Laurent in Little Italy?

I would look at South Asian supermarkets. They are most likely to have it in large amounts and at reasonable prices.

        Would the Bulk Barn do?

It would, but there aren't any near me, so I will probably be heading to Spice Station on Monkland.

How much amount of mustard seed are you looking for? It could get expensive if you're looking for larger amounts.

I think I need 1 cup for the recipe. I know I can mail-order it from Penzey's, where the price is reasonable, but it seems silly to have to do so. I'll see how bad it is at Spice Station.

I've looked into ordering from Penzey's a few times, and the shipping to Canada was exorbitant. The shipping charges double or triple the cost of the order, unless you have a US address you can use.For a basic order worth something like $20, the shipping was over $30. Things might have changed recently as I haven't checked their shipping arrangements to Canada in over a year.

As well, the price of the spices themselves per ounce was the same or even more than what I just paid at Spice Station (the Monkland location). I can't imagine Penzey's quality would be worth that much more than the quality at SS.

Mustard seed is used in smoked meat, I believe. Have you tried approaching a deli like The Main or Schwartz's and asking if they'd sell you a cup? They buy in huge bulk quantities so I'm sure they could offer you a good price for such a small amount.

A cup of mustard seed is about 6 ounces. I usually ship Penzey's to a US address, or pick it up at their store in Albany, neither of which will work for me if I want to make the recipe in the near future. Their shipping charges to Canada are indeed very high, however their mustard seed is $3.50 for 8 oz, or $5.60 for 1 lb (versus the $9 it will cost me for 6 oz at Spice Station). So I will likely bite the bullet, buy a small amount here to use now, and then stock up next time I'm at Penzey's.

One cup is how many ounces? It's $1.50 per ounce at Spice Station. My guess for 1 cup it's about 7-8 ounces. I was there yesterday for something else.

Maxi Dorval sells large(approx. 4-cup) bags. About $2
