Freedman's Bakery to become a craft brewery? - Belmar

Just read that it may become the new headquarters of the East Coast Beer Co.

  1. So sad, no more corn rye but more of that dreadful Beach Haus. Blech! Woulda been cool a decade ago. Now, the Shore needs more bakeries and real butcher shops.

      Ain't that the truth MGZ. I've commented in earlier posts of the dismal bakery scene (sorry cupcakes don't cut it folks).

      Having local butchers would be the best. I miss Bill Brown, from whence and where I grew up.

      1. I'm not sure I'm sad about it since Freedman's is not what it used to be. With the health inspection closing several years ago and the family growing older they seemed to not want to put the effort into the business.

          Mingus, to this writer's purview, Freedman's never cut it. That they were one of the last ones around, only served to elevate their 'status' which was faux to begin with. Their 'hard rolls' whose 'local colloquial handle' escapes me this morning couldn't hold a candle to the Daylight Bakery in South Amboy.

          I'll take the stuff being delivered from Elizabeth, or Newark and I'm lucky that Nino's is in town.

            When I say 'not what it used to be' I'm referring to the 1970's when their hard rolls and corn rye were their signature products.
