Kuala Lumpur - Traditional Chinese-Malaysian snacks
This tin-roofed shack situated right opposite a row of shophouses at the corner of Jalan Lazat 1 and Jalan Lazat in Happy Gardens sell the most amazing array of deep-fried traditional Chinese snacks - all piping hot, dripping with hot oil from the large smoking woks.
There're crispy crullers or "yau char kuai" (油炸粿), mashed red-bean filled "hum chin peng" (油炸面包), and loads of other deep-fried dough of various types: sweet butterfly-shaped ones, salty-savoury ellipses filled with sweet glutinous rice, plus rectangular oblong cakes of radish cake, turnip-filled spring rolls, and even the tri-layer "tnee koay" (a coconut-molasses sticky, hard pudding sandwiched between slices of sweet potatoes and cassava, battered and deep-fried.
Other "breakfast foods" offered there included the spartan fried Hokkien egg-wheat noodles (福建麵) and fried rice noodles or "bee hoon" (米粉), usually served topped with fried egg and accompanied by some pickled green chillis and a dollop of spicy red chilli paste.
