What can I do with EVOO that expired in 2009?

I was given a large bottle of Carbonell extra virgin olive oil and it has a date printed on the bottle of Sept 30 2009. I'm not sure whether that is the date it was made or the expiration date. This is the kind they sell at costco, it says product of spain.

Any chance that it's still useable?

      I'll have to open it and give it a taste. What exactly am I looking for taste wise? I haven't tried many oils.

        It should taste like olive oil. Not rancid. I think you'll know it when you taste it.

          Oil that has gone bad has a vinegary smell. If it smells like oil and has been kept in a dark place and not exposed to extremes of temperature, it's probably fine for frying and other humble uses, i.e., not salads and other raw uses. The main problem will probably be that it has lost most or all of its health benefits and taste, not that it has actually gone bad.

              the good stuff oxidizes out of the oil, leaving just rancid oil -- the bacteria in rancid oil are evil little nasties indeed -- you will remember being sick from rancid oil for a LONG time.

          I agree, use it if it's fine. I rarely if ever look at expiration dates..maybe that's a bad thing but the nose usually knows.

        3. If it's not been opened it should be safe to use.Whether it would still taste good in a salad dressing is another matter. I don't use EVOO to cook with generally but you could use it to confit salmon as the temp is not too high.

            Unopened oils still go rancid over time. You don't need to taste to know; if it's rancid, it will smell bad. Rancid oils harm the liver and ruin the taste of the food they are used in. Though I am the queen of salvaging sub-optimal ingredients and creations, and hate to waste food, when something is rancid I throw it out without hesitation.

                rancid oil can make you wish you were ONLY suffering the worst hangover of your life.

                  Depends on the type of rancidity, not that any are welcome:

                  I have eaten small amounts of rancid food, like nuts and whole wheat flour, from time to time. No symptoms ensued, although for all I know there might have been an effect on liver function.

                    hard to sort out which poison affects the liver function, ain't it? :)

                    I will never forget having a very busy Saturday, and eating a peanut-butter sandwich because I was starving and it was fast (eh, it's a little off, but how bad can it be?)...ditched my very busy Saturday clutching the porcelain throne and vowing I'd never keep peanut butter anywhere but the fridge from that point on.

                      We had a jar of rancid cashews once and for some reason I kept eating them, well until I finally remembered to put it on the grocery list. I agree, some oils go rancid and it' snot so pungent, but others will blow you over. Even with the cashews it was easy to tell that something was different from fresh-again the nose knows.

                    Agreed, it's not worth messing with if if it's rancid. Additionaly, if it was bought at CostCo you aren't out a lot. No snub on their oil, I buy a bit of it.

                2. I would taste it to see if it is off. If not, I'd use to oil poach potatoes.

                        Thanks. I'll never have enough oil to do that! I'll stick to 5 minutes parboil for peeled potato chunks, roughed up then roasted in a shallow dish at 400 in about 1/4 inch pre-heated neutral oil for 1 hour, with a turn at about 40 minutes.

                          It really didn't take *too* much oil, although I can be on the frugal side and have a little clutch about such things. I poached my batch (to feed four people, with some leftovers) in a wide shallow pan and it took about 2/3 to 3/4 of a 33.8 fl. oz. bottle of olive oil. I used the Trader Joe's Spanish Olive Oil, which IIRC runs around 8 bucks or so a bottle, so the dollar outlay wasn't anything too terribly gasp-worthy.

                          As far as the OP goes, I'd never use oil with any suspicion of rancidity for oil-poaching.

                  2. It's probably rancid, and if so it will taste awful. I wouldn't take any chances eating it, no sense making yourself ill.

                    There are other things you can do with olive oil though besides eating it. You can make a furniture polish out of it by mixing equal parts of it with real lemon juice.

                    You can also shine leather with it too.

                    You can use it as a moisturizer on your skin and it also will repel black flies.

                      if it's been properly stored, it may be fine.

                      give it a sniff/taste before committing to use it though. if it is rancid? i wouldn't put it on my skin either. it's also not good as wood treatment since it goes rancid and degrades unlike mineral oil.

                      how did you forget olive oil for 4 years? :)

                    2. I gave it a try and it actually tastes pretty good. I feel fine so I don't think its rancid. I'm pretty suprised. I guess as long as you don't open the bottle the oil stays in pretty fair shape.

                        sealed in a glass jar and kept in the dark it should be fine.

                        there are degrees of rancidity though and not all of them will make you violently ill. however if oil smells even a bit "off", just just chuck it as that will indeed lead to inflammation and ill health effects.
