what the hell happened?

mariacarmen Sep 17, 2013 08:09 AM

on my phone, everything looks different, worse, more scrolling involved, can't find anything... typing on phone still sucks... i hope this is temporary because this change will ensure i never look at CH unless i'm at a computer again.

What kind of phone? My galaxy is still the same as it has been

      Hi mariacarmen,

Let us know which pages you are seeing problems, and what you're seeing. Also, what type of device are you on and what browser? Is it the same you have consistently been using?

      Thanks

LG Inspire - and yes, the exact same thing i do every day, several times a day. It's the whole site. i google Chowhound, I get the San Francisco Bay Area - Chowhound link, i click on it. that's all normal. it used to then take a few steps to get to my profile and all my working boards, but now it goes to a listing - my icon on top, "WELCOME BACK mariacarmen" and then a listing of things, all links - there are no graphics: Home, Product Reviews, Recipes, etc., with My Boards appearing halfway down. When i click on My Boards, i get the same page, but now if I scroll down, i get another listing of links, to my boards. i do not get a listing of the boards i've been active on. if i click on Home Cooking, for example, i am still on the same page, but i can scroll down yet again and get the links to the posts. again, no graphics, just links. opening a link - WFD, for instance - same thing. i'm still on the Welcome Back screen, and can scroll down to the thread - and ALL the pictures that are contained in that thread now appear at the top, first, before any of the posts. on the posts themselves, there is no place to hit reply to any individual post.

if no one else is having this problem.... something changed with my phone? nothing else on my phone has changed....

Nothing seems off on the Android devices I've been using, so I am not sure what the problem is.

If you're able to log-out and then log back in to the site, definitely try that. And if you're able to capture a screenshot of what you're seeing that would be helpful too.

It sounds like what you're seeing is not expected at all, so I feel hopeful we can figure it out!

i can't see any place to log out. and here's where you find out how tech-ignorant i am - i don't know how to take a screen shot from my phone.

            i'm hoping!

            Hi mariacarmen.

We're not seeing any issues with Android devices here. It sounds like what you're seeing is actually correct. What changed is that you're now getting the mobile site on your device, instead of the desktop site (and we did recently release an update that made that possible). The list of links--Home, Product Reviews, Recipes, etc--along with your username at the top is what's found in the mobile "drawer," which is one way to navigate the site on mobile. It's also where you can log out--scroll all the way to the bottom for the Log Out link.

We introduced the mobile drawer in December of last year. Here's a post mentioning it:

            http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/8818...

            Hope that helps!

              mariacarmen Sep 17, 2013 11:10 AM

oh! i'm sorry, but it's really, really terrible! it was cumbersome, but much easier to navigate using the desktop site on my phone. no wonder others were complaining so much about viewing CH on their phones!

and the only reason i wanted to log out was to see what happened when i logged back in. i don't want to log out and use it as a non-member, as it will not show my own boards/active postings, correct?

so are you saying that i can go back to using it the old way, as a desktop site on my phone, or not? if not, i'll not be viewing CH on my phone at all.

The reason I suggested logging out was so that you could log back in and make sure all appropriate pages have refreshed.

As far as the mobile site is concerned, I'm not totally sure why you'd be seeing any changes that are different from yesterday. You said the San Francisco board page looked the same as it did last time you logged in? I'm a bit confused about what looks different.

                1. re: Dave MP
                  mariacarmen Sep 17, 2013 01:24 PM

the board does not look the same, the LINK to the board looks the same. everything else looks different.

as for why it's different today from yesterday, DeobrahL said: "(and we did recently release an update that made that possible)" i know the site was down last night for maintenance of some sort - could this be tied to that? again, it seems unlikely since it appears i'm the only one.

i'll try logging out/in and report back. thanks.

                    mariacarmen Sep 17, 2013 04:36 PM

i looged out and logged back in. same thing.

i also read this: "New mobile site which contains a "mobile drawer" allowing for easier navigation around Chowhound and other CHOW pages. This is the red box in the top left of the mobile site, which opens a panel of options."

i only get a red box on the mobile site if i'm logged out. otherwise, if i'm logged in, it goes from the San Francisco Bay Area - Chowhound link to the WELCOME BACK message. and then to the listings of all the links to threads.

i'm sorry, it's really really REALLY awful; again, now i know why people on WFD were saying they never view CH on their phones. as far as i'm concerned, it's a total deal breaker. i'll have to limit my CHing even more, to only times i'm at an actual computer. hopefully someday CH will get a decent app.

                    Thanks.

                      Hi mariacarmen,

It's really hard to help with what you're seeing without seeing it ourselves. It doesn't sound like you're seeing the normal/expected view of the mobile site, since it's working fine for us on all of the devices we've tested.

If you can take a screenshot of what you're seeing, that would be great. According to Wikipedia: "As of Android 4.0, screenshots can be taken by pressing and holding the Volume Down button and the Sleep/Wake button. They are stored in PNG format in the "Gallery" app, inside the "Screenshots" folder."

Finally, just a guess based on what you're describing: is it possible that some setting on your phone is zooming in the screen, or making all text/pages larger? It almost sounds like you're in a super-zoomed-in version of the mobile site somehow, since on the regular mobile site, you should always be able to see the red box which opens and closes the mobile drawer. So maybe try zooming out and see what you see?

                      Thanks for your patience.

                      Dave MP

Sleep/wake button sometimes refers to the "Power" button.

Do you have an HTC Inspire? I can't find mention of an LG Inspire. Looks like you should be able to take a screenshot on an HTC Inspire by pressing the power button at the top of the phone and the home "button" on the lower part of the screen. Or maybe the power button and the volume down button as Dave MP mentioned above.

i'm sorry - i'm really bad about these things. i have an LG for sure - maybe an Optimus? i can't find on the phone where it says it.

i just looked up a video on how to take a screen shot on the LG Optimus - i was able to find the features to do it but it didn't work. i'll get someone better equipped techno-wise to help me.

                            thanks for your continuing help.

funny thing, tho, i was able to look at old "tabs" of chowhound on my phone, on the google search, and for a second they would pull up the old view i had as of 2 days ago, but when i click on it it changes to the new views. sad!

hey, i did it! if nothing else, i learned one new thing today. below is the screen i get AFTER i google Chowhound, get the San Francisco Bay Area - Chowhound link and click that.

so when i click on any of the links, it keeps me on this same page but i can scroll down to where the link has opened, but it's just the listing of my boards. if i click on my activity iget the same page you see here, but i can scroll down to where my activity has opened. i if click the latest WFD, for instance, again, this same exact screen comes up, and i have to scroll down to where WFD has now opened. i can see all the responses to a post, but they're all open, and there is no place to hit reply. is this really what everyone else has been dealing with on the mobile site?

                              1. re: mariacarmen

One idea and then I'll leave it to the CH staff to actually troubleshoot it. That almost looks like it's loading a text-only version of the page (or a format optimized for non-modern mobile web browsers) even though it does show your icon image at the top. What it's doing is displaying the full contents of a menu that would normally be "collapsed" if displayed properly. So it does actually load the content you want, but, as you experienced, you have to scroll down past the menu "cruft" before you can see it.

How old is your phone? It may be the browser on the phone simply cannot display the new format. That doesn't necessarily explain why it would change overnight and not in direct correspondence of the last maintenance period.

Try clearing the browser cache by tapping the Menu key while you're in the browser, tap More, Settings, and then Clear Cache (these are instructions for the LG Optimus, hopefully they make sense for your model). Then try going to the CH site again.

i purchased this phone at the end of 2012, and it's an LG MOTION (finally figured that out.) and yes, it was working perfectly up until 2 days ago!

i'll try your suggestions. thanks so much!

                                  ETA: I found this:

Clearing chrome browser cache on LG Motion
This will clear cache data from google chrome on LG Motion.
                                  Steps involved:
                                  1. Open App settings. (by tapping right bottom control of the phone)
                                  2. fine Chrome on already installed apps.
                                  3. tap on chrome. details of chrome will open up.
                                  4. You can see "clear cache" button there. (You might have to roll down on screen a little bit, depends on font size you have chosen.).
                                  5. tap on Clear cache button and cache is gone.

when i hit the chrome app, it opens up my google search - no details for Chrome!

That phone should be able to properly format the mobile version of the CH site, as evidence by the fact that it was working two days ago. Here's the steps for clearing the cache for the Chrome browser on the LG Motion:

                                    1. Open App settings. (by tapping right bottom control of the phone)
                                    2. fine Chrome on already installed apps.
                                    3. tap on chrome. details of chrome will open up.
                                    4. You can see "clear cache" button there. (You might have to roll down on screen a little bit, depends on font size you have chosen.).
                                    5. tap on Clear cache button and cache is gone.

                                    Steps above copied/pasted from http://www.android.net/forum/lg-motio....
