Huevos Rancheros

I am on a quest to find THE best huevos rancheros in the city. I have tried the ones at Five Points and the Smith. These were passable but there must be better.

  1. I've had great versions at both Cookshop (it's a relative of Five Points, but I don't know how similar the preparations are) and Clinton St. Baking Company (my favorite, but not based on a large sample).

    1. Prune has a good version at brunch- but either go early or deal with the wait.
      Cafe Habana is also pretty good.
      Cookshop is usually great but sometimes not- really inconsistant.
      Salvation taco has chilequiles that are not the same but worth mentioning

      1. I don't know if it's the best as I don't alway order it, but Clinton Street Baking's version was always enjoyable.

        1. To find the BEST huevos rancheros in this city, one must venture deep into the seedy underbelly of the grittiest Mexican ghettos in Queens and The Bronx. Best to stick to the fancified versions sold at places listed in the thread,

            I dunno, I like your first thought better if that's where the BEST are. And if you come across huevos motulenos, they are like turbocharged huevos rancheros with chrome hubcaps.

              The BEST huevos rancheros in Manhattan (unfancified), IMHO, are at Tulcingo del Valle in Hell's Kitchen. We moved from HK to Brooklyn a few years ago and still travel in on weekends to have their version. So good.

            2. Coppelia does a pretty good version - and the Cuban diner is open 24 hours.

              The one at Clinton St. is certainly satisfying, although lacks real robust flavor. I honestly feel like most popular brunch places serve them, albeit none are all that authentically "Mexican."

                Curious what qualifies in your mind as "authentically 'Mexican.'"
                My experience is that there is no single authentic version. The version at Clinton Street has all of the classic elements, though; I'm not sure what you find lacking. (Although, as someone who prefers stronger flavors myself, I apply tabasco generously, but that's true no matter where I get my huevos rancheros).

                  I guess what qualifies in my mind as "authentically Mexican" is very simply a plate of fried eggs on top of pan fried/griddled corn tortillas, covered in tomato chile. Usually with some refried beans and rice on the side, and maybe slices of avocado for good measure. No more, no else. That in my mind isn't really a fussy or even pretty brunch dish, but that's what I'm used to getting out of the hole-in-the-wall taquerias and bodegas growing up in Los Angeles.

                  I'm not sure what your experiences entail, but I wouldn't be surprised if your idea of a huevos rancheros is very different. Not that I don't enjoy a more Americanized version - perhaps with cheese, black beans, different salsas, guacamole, and god forbid flour tortillas - but that's just not what I imagine when I hear huevos racheros. But then again I don't think my version was what the OP had in mind anyway, given that Five Points and The Smith was mentioned.

                  That said, the insanely cheap and simple version at Cafe Habana is kind of right up my alley.

                    So what I like about the Clinton Street Baking Company version is its simplicity, kinda like you describe. And unlike many versions, it's not prepared as a casserole or with all of the ingredients layered, but rather with all of the ingredients separated so that the diner can add the salsa, guac, sour cream in the proportions he/she wants. Agree that the flavor is not "robust" (again, in my mind that's what hot sauce is for!); rather its flavors are more simple and delicate, which in my mind is a plus (even though the terms "simple" and "delicate" are hard to apply once I empty the bottle of tabasco on it).

                      Hmm, nice descriptions there... Perhaps it's been a while since I've had the huevos rancheros at Clinton St., I always have a hard time deviating from the pancakes and biscuit sandwich there. I should definitely go back and give it another try - really hope they can omit the sour cream though.

                        They easily can omit the sour cream, and it's easy to remove if you don't want it.

                        When I go, I'll sometimes order both the pancakes and the huevos rancheros, which is WAY too much food, but I need sweet and savory!

              2. I liked the huevos rancheros at Rosa Mexicano near Lincoln Center.
