Singapore - Trinidadian flavours at Lime House, Jiak Chuan St

Funny how two small formerly British-ruled tropical islands can go such divergent ways: Trinidad with its laidback culture and joie de vivre, whilst Singapore went headlong the other direction. Anyhoo, the two islands do share some things in common - multi-cultural populace, and a love for spicy foods!

It was a long time coming, but Singapore finally has a Trinidadian restaurant when Lime House (so-called as "lime" is a Caribbean term meaning to hang out with friends) opened recently. I dropped in for a quick bite:

- Started off with the elaborately named cocktail: Lychee Ooh Lala, which consisted of white rum, lychee liqueur, lychee syrup, sugar syrup, lime juice, mint leaves, and Sprite. Refreshingly tropical, and rather sweet for the Singaporean palate.

- Caribbean Fish Cakes with sweet corn, herbed garlic aioli, mixed greens: loved these a *lot*. Spiced-up fishcakes, absolutely bursting with flavours.

- Curry goat served with coconut rice n’ peas, with plantain batons. Surprisingly mild for a Trinidadian curry, but very tasty all the same. The coconut rice had a reddish hue - lovely textures and complemented the curry *perfectly*.

A small dish of super-hot sauce was provided in case one's tongue needs to be anaesthetised :-D

I'll have to come back again and check out the rest of the menu.

  1. I just checked their web-site and saw Jamaican jerk wings being offered. I have to drop by and try that out one of these days.

      The restaurant's still finding its feet, Martha. I have quite a few Trinidadian friends in London, and the cooking here did not match up with what my friends cooked there. Tasted pretty toned down, for some reason.
