New(er) Asheville and Greenville, SC Restaurants

The Eater National website just posted its first "Heatmap" for Greenville listing new restaurants. Their comments are: " Here now, Eater's first-ever Heatmap of Greenville, SC, which contains nine newish restaurants that have been garnering some serious buzz. For the list, Eater asked Assistant Editor of TOWN magazine and Greenville resident Andrew Huang for his picks of the hottest openings of the last year or so."

It's on page 3 of the website.

They also did one for Asheville back in late August. You can find it using their search function.

    Thanks for posting! I saw the Asheville heatmap and was amazed, but to see one for Greenville is downright bizarre. Eater is one of the few sites other than Chowhound that I ever give much creedance to.

    I have only been to 2 of their 9. I will point out that Sip and Quest are bars, not restaurants. Sully's steamers served me a wet and slimy and to my mind, disgusting bagel. Obviously...its what they meant to do...I suppose to each their own. I didn't appreciate that the bagel I ordered w/ avacado was merely avacado spread. I guess when you made it gushy w/ steam the same would have resulted anyway. Why not put Einstiens bagels on the heatmap? Fail.

    Rick's Deli and Market has potential. I've had one meal of small plates there that was pretty good. Some of the pastries are very, VERY good. A couple of times I've been given pastries that were quite stale. They are also very expensive (many items are $5 or worse) so i'm a little leary of taking the chance now. But still...a good addition to G'ville.

    I'm looking forward to trying the rest of the list (except Grill Marks...the Larkin's people have a history of bad restaurants, no idea why they would do better w/ hamburgers. i did boozy shakes in college, don't need any more.)

      Update: So I finally tried Paulista. 4 tables in the back of the convenience store. Specials board , no menu (the one online w/ the sandwiches is not available). Everything was good, the lady cooking was quite charming. I had the chicken enchiladas and tried the vegetable curry and a roast beef wrap. If you wanted, you could buy some high-end beer in singles, or some decent (Coppola claret for example) wine from the store to go w/ your meal. No corkage ;-) They also had Mad Dog. The cuisine is Goan, which means from Goa, a province in India once colonized by the Portuguese. This info from the proprietess.

      Also tried Bacon Brothers. Next door to Earth Fare on Pelham. I liked the bacon/caramel popcorn. I had an arugula salad w/ "compressed peaches" and goat cheese. It was good. I tried two charcuterie selecitons...they were fine, but I have to admit I'm not the worlds biggest expert on cured meat. The best thing I had was the farro verde side dish. Not sure why they called it "verde", but it was good nonetheless, with field peas and hominy. Husband had a cherry ham sandwich. It was thinnly sliced, apparently uncured ham (pork, basically).

      That plus a glass of cava and a beer, and the bill was $53, so it's reasonable for a dinner. On the other hand, my husband, who saw it as a ham sandwich and a beer, did NOT think it was reasonable. Service was fine, but inexperienced.

      Working my way through the heatmap .... ;-)

        A Goan restaurant in the back of a convenience store - that sounds pretty awesome actually!

          I read the recipe, but I still can't figure out what jaggery is?

              Yep, it's sort of like molasses in solid form. I think you usually have to grate it. I don't think it's found much outside of Asia.

                  That's a new one for me, but it looks like they are very similar.
