Downtown MSP – Dine at bar; Great food; Watch Football

Gabatta Sep 9, 2013 10:21 AM

I am looking for a place near the Westin to eat dinner and watch the football games this evening. I will be dining solo at the bar. I'm open to all cuisines, and would like to prioritize excellent food. However, it must come with a bar that will be showing the games.

I’m willing to take a 5-10 min taxi ride for something that fits the bill. All suggestions are appreciated in advance.

THe only thing that comes to mind would be the beer garden at butcher and the boar. The menu is pretty scaled down, but a bar seat there would be my move. otherwise, mediocre food or steakhouse would be the suggestion. Seven has tv's for sure in the bar. Not really a winning combo in mpls I guess.

Wish I had seen this before and I would have checked our Butcher & Boar, though it is a bit steamy to sit outside tonight. I ended up at the bar at Manny's and had once of the all time most overpriced and disgraceful pieces of meat ever. I opted for the "special" dry aged, bone in NY strip. The steak exhibited none of the expected nutty dry aged flavor and was poorly marbled (doubt this was prime beef). I ordered it med-rare, and it came charred on the outside and cold in the middle. I should know better than to fall back to a steak house. A sports bar or pub would have been a better bet. I was back at the hotel by halftime.

Interesting, because that is considered by many to be the best steakhouse in MSP, though I've heard plenty of arguments the other way. I've never been, so I stay out of that conversation.

I'm stunned to read this too as I've never had a bad meal at Manny's. I can't ever recall anything there not being perfect or if it wasn't, them fixing it immediately. I've been trying to think back over this board and can't remember that many complaints about Manny's either. Everyone has their own opinions, but I think your poor experience is the exception and not the rule. I'm sorry it happened.

Next time try J.D. Hoyt's over on Washington. Order the pork chops and the buddy bowl and sit in the bar. You'll be able to follow all the games.

I didn't like Manny's the two times I've visited, but I can see why fans of steakhouses like it.

I was eating at the bar and they offered to "warm the steak up". No, sorry, the correct thing there is to re-fire a new steak. A steak already charred on the outside, raw on the inside and cut into is not going to heat up well. I might add that it was woefully under seasoned as well. It was honestly one of the worst prepared steaks I have had anywhere.

The caesar salad was excellent, scotch poured generously and bar service generally good, so not all was lost.
