Singapore - Superb Viet sandwiches from Baguette, Vivocity

  • 2

I loved 'Baguette - The Viet Inspired Deli' to bits: it certainly delivers where it matters, offering freshly-toasted Vietnamese baguettes filled with ham, pate & sweet crisp vegetable pickles, the likes of which you'd be hard put to find outside Vietnam. I'd been a fan since it operated out of a little shop space in the now-demolished Multi-Storey Carpark at Market Street a decade ago. It closed a while back, but is soon back and as good as ever.

What I had at their Vivocity outlet:

- Saigon Baguette: 3 slices of Oriental -spiced ham, pate, fresh parsley, cucumber and crisp pickled carrots. This is their classic offering and as good as any you'd buy off the streets of Saigon or Hanoi.

- Sushi Bread: seaweed, chicken ham, tuna, chicken floss, cucumber & mayonnaise rolled inside soft, fluffy bread. The shop's own creation and a nod to Singaporeans' love for soft Japanese-style rolls. I was also addicted to this item for as long as I can remember - like their baguette offerings, this sushi bread roll is another example of how Baguette's talented chefs managed to meld together different flavours and textures to achieve a truly pleasurable meal-in-a-bun.

- Soda Chanh: fresh lime juice, soda and syrup. This was a light and refreshing drink which I discovered in Saigon many years back during my first trip to Vietnam, and I'd been loving it ever since. And the version here with sour plum was simply fantastic.
