Is Lonestar really what people drink in Texas, or is that just a myth? Are there any good Texas-made beers that people drink in Texas that are better than Lonestar? Thanks.

My theory is that the only Lone Star that gets sold is to tourists, filmmakers, and expatriates that come home for a visit and think the longneck six pack will look darling on the shelf in the Texas-themed den. And I'm close to damn sure no one actually drinks it. ;-)

A straw poll of my (admittedly uncouth) circle of friends would probably come out with Bud or Coors Light on top.

I have to add my two cents being that I'm a native Texan with my lineage going back over 150 years. So with that said, my family has enjoyed Lone Star for decades. My father (age 70) only drinks Lone Star and my grandfather used to drink his hot out of the back of his pickup. My dad is not a hipster by any stretch of the imagination - just a country boy who enjoys Lone Star. I can't imagine ever buying him anything different. Shiner does nothing for him and for years it was too small a brewry to have any consistency. So sometimes a good batch, sometimes bad. Lone Star was always consistent. I have to say Lone Star is as Texan as it gets. Many more people enjoy it that are not visitors to our state.

For $3.19 for a six-pack of tallboys, there is no better VALUE in Texas than Lone Star.

Sure, there are plenty of better beers in Texas, but I'll drink up Lone Star in a heartbeat. People laugh, but I think it's a fine beer for drinking. No it's not a "fine handcrafted beer", but no other beer can claim to be the "National Beer of Texas".

There are plenty of other Texas beers out there...Real Ale, out of Blanco, Texas, makes a great one: Full Moon Pale Rye Ale.

Houston's Saint Arnold's Brewery makes some good beers too. They're distributed all over Texas, I believe. My favorite is their Amber. I haven't tried their new Elissa IPA yet...

OK, another LS theory, this time why it gets a bad rap - Texans can, at times, be almost paranoid about being labeled as "rednecks" and distance ourselves from the yeehaw-factor as much as we can. We'll argue and debate proper chili, as long as we can chowhoundishly bandy about a pinch of cinnamon or a smidgeon of anchovy paste or whatever else god-awful thing we try - but gods-help-us if we admit that the second best thing to a great pot of chili is the Frito Pie you make out of the very last bowlful.

Lone Star is probably a decent beer - I wouldn't know, the last time "I" had Lone Star I was 17, living in Connecticut and you-guessed-it, helping to empty out bottles to put on my step-brother's "beer wall."

By the way - I'm Shan, from out near Abilene, kinda barging in and saying hello all at once. ;-)

I enjoy Shiner Blonde quite a bit too but I have to say I'm pretty disappointed by Shiner Light. I thought the Light Beer would help me to maintain my girlish figure, but the heck with it - I'm back to the Bock and Blonde.

Frank M - for what it's worth I'm stopping and picking up a six pack of St Arnolds on the way home from work tonight, so your shameless plugs were effective!!! I don't think I've tried it before, so I'll report back to you and let you know what I think.

Isn't Lone Star just a "virtual brand" now, part of the Pabst portfolio of in-name-only regional labels (including the various beers formerly produced by Pabst, Stroh, Heileman, Schlitz, among others), all of which are contract-brewed by Miller? I think Pabst also owns the Pearl name.
