Mayday Mayday : Angela's Banh Mi is no more !

I am sad to report an awful Paris food news today... As I went to get my banh mi fix (which I've been doing every time I was working near the metro Arts et Métiers) at the infamous Banh Mi shop in rue de Volta, I shockingly discovered that the place was sparkling clean, with not one but two ladies making sandwiches, and even when a third one arrived, the noise level was still way too low for the place... which could mean only one thing : Angela was not there.

I tried to gather some information, but all I got was that she left, these new bunch bought the place and supposedly are doing "the same recipes"... The truth is the marinade/sauce isn't bad, but the meat was tough (both the pork and the beef), and the carrots weren't nearly as brightly seasoned and fresh as they used to be.
I would still rank these banh mi higher than some dreadful stuff I ate around Belleville, but they're definitely not as good as Angela's, and I'm not even mentioning the fact that the magic is gone.

Sadly, before me an american man, behind me an english man... they surely came expecting the banh mi that has been recommended here, without knowing that the owners had changed.

Sad day.

  1. I believe that she already had another place nearby that she wanted to develop. Have you tried/do you have her cell number?

I do have her cel, have not called yet.

On 27 March 2015, we are sitting at 81, rue Turbigo eating delicious banh mi. We ran across it by chance, then found this thread on Chowhound. Angie is here! The porc caramel is delicious, our 7 year old is getting poulet, with a mango bubble tea to accompany. Delicious!

      2. Angela sold the shop. I agree that the Banh Mi are not as good now, but still well above average. Unfortunately, they've also raised the price by .50.

Angie does have a (closed) shop on rue Turbigo that she is considering opening but has not as of yet. She has also spoken of opening a Banh Mi shop in London! of all places!

Anybody have a recommendation for Banh Mi in the 13th? There are lots of Pho shops but I only know two places that make Banh Mi and they are below average.

        1. According to someone who commented on my blog (source unverified), the Banh-Mi shop will reopen at 81,rue Turbigo Paris 75003, and Angela will be there...

          No date yet.

1 March, 2014 (at least that's her goal). But I don't think it's going to be a Banh-Mi shop. Previously she had been talking about a Salon de Thé.

She has been in London recently.

Thank you, I now realize that you had already mentioned the shop on rue de Turbigo.
At least, it now seems "certain" that she plans on opening it. Can't wait to see what she decides to do with it !

I don't care if My Angela is making tarantula meatball. I'm there.

                1. re: Parigi

As the ancient philosophers used to debate, how many tarantulas does it take Angela to make a meatball?

                  1. re: mangeur

Or alternately how many meatballs would a tarantula make out of Angela ?

                    1. re: mangeur

Deep fried Tarantualas are quite a delicacy in Cambodia - they are quite large and are served on sticks like lollipops - so be careful what you wish for...!

Ew. Quoique… I have eaten fried silkworms int he Golden Triangle, the food machismo of my Canto ancestry oblige.

              2. re: Rio Yeti

Today was the 2nd time since your post I checked out 81 rue Turbigo. Nut'n.

                1. re: Parigi

Was there about three weeks ago and some guys were doing some cleanup work inside. I stopped and asked for Angie, but she wasn't around. Was told that something is coming. But what and when?

Was back last week and it was locked up tight.

              3. Her new place is now open! I havent tried it yet, it's a bit pricey. 6 euros for the banh mi now.

Is the new address given correctly above ?
I have passed by recently and have seen no activity at all
And she is doing Banh Mi again ? I thought she had sold the small place in order to take over a bigger place and make it a tea room?
So the tea room is selling Banh Mi ?? This is strange.

                  1. re: Parigi

Yeah, the address is correct! It's quite inconspicuous. But there are a few posters about the food on the window.

                    1. re: Parigi

I don't know whether it's a tea room, I didnt go in. But on the menu outside there were bahn mi's, a few rice and meat dishes and some bubble teas. There was probably some other things on there that I didn't notice.

                      1. re: megtenni

                        On rue de Turbigo ?
Was the street number correct ?
Two weeks ago the address was deserted.

                        1. re: Parigi

..just got a message from Angela. Yes she is open on Turbigo. I haven't been there yet but plan to go in a week or so. She didn't say what she's serving.

                    2. A bit late to this, but I hadn't been for over a year and panicked that Angela had gone! She is indeed at 81 rue de Turbigo. 5 mins from old shop. A great space with tables (and high rent, so give her lots of business!). She now does bun and bubble tea in addition to her famous banh mi. I honestly think they're the best I've ever had, including Vietnam and even after all that time, we were welcomed back. She is great. It's a true bargain for paris. Please support!
