Mayday Mayday : Angela's Banh Mi is no more !
I am sad to report an awful Paris food news today... As I went to get my banh mi fix (which I've been doing every time I was working near the metro Arts et Métiers) at the infamous Banh Mi shop in rue de Volta, I shockingly discovered that the place was sparkling clean, with not one but two ladies making sandwiches, and even when a third one arrived, the noise level was still way too low for the place... which could mean only one thing : Angela was not there.
I tried to gather some information, but all I got was that she left, these new bunch bought the place and supposedly are doing "the same recipes"... The truth is the marinade/sauce isn't bad, but the meat was tough (both the pork and the beef), and the carrots weren't nearly as brightly seasoned and fresh as they used to be.
I would still rank these banh mi higher than some dreadful stuff I ate around Belleville, but they're definitely not as good as Angela's, and I'm not even mentioning the fact that the magic is gone.
Sadly, before me an american man, behind me an english man... they surely came expecting the banh mi that has been recommended here, without knowing that the owners had changed.
Angela sold the shop. I agree that the Banh Mi are not as good now, but still well above average. Unfortunately, they've also raised the price by .50.
Angie does have a (closed) shop on rue Turbigo that she is considering opening but has not as of yet. She has also spoken of opening a Banh Mi shop in London! of all places!
Anybody have a recommendation for Banh Mi in the 13th? There are lots of Pho shops but I only know two places that make Banh Mi and they are below average.
