Release Notes for 9/5/13 – New Photo Experience

Today’s release introduced some new features to the desktop and tablet versions of Chowhound. I am including three photos in this post, so you can try it out some of the changes right on this page.

Photos on Chowhound Discussions:

1) If you click a photo in a discussion, it will open a modal (box) that lets you view all photos from that discussion.

2) Each photo includes a snippet of the post that it’s a part of, and a link to navigate directly to that post.

3) When you close the photo modal, you should end up back where you started on the discussion, with all your collapsed/uncollapsed posts in the same state.

4) You can close the photo modal by clicking outside it, clicking on the x, or pressing escape on your keyboard.

5) Each photo has a distinct URL link that can be copied using the link button, allowing you to paste the link elsewhere.

6) You can click the icon in the top left of the modal to toggle to a thumbnail view of all photos in a discussion.

7) Coming Soon: Share a specific photo on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. As of this release, Twitter should be working, while Pinterest and Facebook may still only share a generic link for the discussion.

New Dropdown for Logged-In Users in Top-Right of Screen:

8) Use the new dropdown to navigate to Settings or Profile, or to Log Out. We are beginning the task of separating Profile and Settings, and this is the first step in making that change.

9) Clicking on your name will bring you straight into your profile.

If you have any comments or questions feel free to leave those here.
Thanks!

  1. Hmmm, I did what I did before on another thread (right-clicked to see the picture in a separate tab), but when I closed the modal view as well as the 2nd tab, all posts were closed as if I had read all the posts (when I hadn't).

Will have to wait to see if clicking on photo in another thread, such as the What's For Dinner threads, closes or keeps open the unread posts.

      Hi LindaWhit,

No need to right-click anymore. You can just stay in your tab, look at the photos, then close the photos, and you'll be back where you started.

      1. re: Dave MP

Yes, I know that. Although I didn't know that prior to having right-clicked on a pic in another thread. Since right-clicking was the ONLY way to ensure new posts in the thread remained unread after viewing the pic in the past, it's habit to do so. So it was a bit disconcerting to have the entire thread be shown as "read" when I clicked out of the picture.

Again, will have to wait until another picture is posted on a thread I'm reading/commenting on to see if the new format does work.

Here's another picture so you can test. :)

Problem is, there's no other posts that I haven't read on this thread. :-)

Bubble tea? I could use some right now.

      2. I'd noticed this earlier today before seeing this post. Great upgrade!

        1. I don't post photos, but I do look at them on occasion. From a reader's perspective the team has done a very nice job on this upgrade. Slick appearance, functions as described, and adds value to the reading experience. Well done!

          1. Thank you!

            1. This is a wonderful improvement; thank you!

              1. The photo popping up in a separate window is great -- nice work on that one. Especially nice that the read/unread parts of the thread are unaffected.

As for clicking on username to see profile, is it normal for there to be a noticeable lag after clicking? It was a long enough lag, that I previously thought (before reading this thread) that you had to click on the "Profile" dropdown. Just tested it, and I see there's a lag if you do that as well. I don't remember there being a lag before this change but I could be wrong.

No, I made mention of the new lag in refreshing on a separate thread, Steve Green. That was most definitely NOT there prior to the "upgrade".

                  1. re: LindaWhit

Is this lag only happening when you click your username in the top right?

Or do you also see a longer-than-usual lag when you access your profile page in other ways (for example, clicking on your username within a thread, or using a bookmark in your browser).

                    1. re: Dave MP

I just tested it out by clicking my name in the post just above yours, Dave. Same lag time.

                      1. re: Dave MP

What LindaWhit said. Appx. 3-second lag.

                        1. re: Steve Green

I guess I can deal with three seconds :) But I'm retired!

                  2. Definitely a handy feature. Thanks!

                    1. Recently (within the last few days, not sure if related to this update) I've noticed that I've not been able to use the left/right directional keys in text fields on the site. I notice this most frequently when I want to highlight text by holding down Shift, or moving from word to word by holding down Control, and then pressing the arrow keys, but even just pressing the left/right arrow keys by themselves do not advance the cursor (though up/down keys seem unaffected). The browser will momentarily act as if it's reloading the page or loading a new page but does not actually change the contents of the page.

This happens on multiple browsers (I've tested with most recent versions of Firefox and Chrome) and on multiple systems (though they're both Windows 8--I'm trying to find a Mac to test with). The critical thing is that it happens only on Chowhound, not on other sites.

Could this be a weird side-effect of the modal photo box, which does detect left/right arrow key presses to advance the pictures?

                      1. re: PeterCC

I have also noticed this (using the most recent version of Chrome with Vista), only on Chowhound, since the 9/5 release. The up/down arrows work normally, but the left/right arrows don't work, as PeterCC says. However, the left/right arrow keys work normally in Firefox on OSX.

                        1. re: Caitlin McGrath

FYI, It's 45 minutes after my post above, and while the left/right arrow keys still don't work in the field I'm typing in right now (on the PC), they did in another thread I replied to a moment ago in another tab in the same browser window (here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/9161...).

                          1. re: Caitlin McGrath

I was speculating that maybe the arrow keys are "captured" after the modal photo window opens and then closed but I've seen the behavior on a page where I've never opened a photo and I've seen the behavior not happen after viewing a photo so...

                            1. re: PeterCC

I was able to replicate this and I think it does have to do with the photo modal. Hopefully it's something we can fix, and we're looking into it. Thanks!

                              1. re: Dave MP

Dave, glad to know that you were able to replicate it and are looking into it.

I think I've discovered what element on the page is being "advanced" by the arrows, and it's not the photos, but rather the advertisements, specifically one of the squarish ones along the side of the posts (right now it's cycling between Flash ads for Chevy Impala and a static ad to a Chow article stating "Plan Your Sign-Off to Summer" presented by Stella Artois Cidre when I press the arrow keys).

The bug does still seem related to photos, as I am only able to trigger this behavior on posts that have user-posted photos in them (for example this post). And I can trigger it even if I'm not in a text field. Indeed, I don't even have to be logged into the site to trigger the ad cycling with my arrow key.

I cannot trigger the bug in any way on a post without user-posted photos, like this one for example: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/916255.

Update: I can replicate the same behavior in Safari on the Mac with posts that have user-uploaded photos.

                      2. This is a VAST improvement, and I love being able to scroll through other pictures at the same time. Love this!

                        1. Glad people are enjoying the new photo experience! Thanks!

                          1. I really like this new 'stuff.' Thanks.

                            1. One more bug, can't replicate it on the spot but I've noticed on my iPhone 5, in Safari, when I click on a thread, occasionally when I click the back nav button, it just loads the same page again.

I've been experiencing the same thing today.

                              2. The image size (520 x 390 pixels) is still woefully small, for no good reason that I can think of. WAY behind the times.

Also, no way to delete and add photos via the edit function.

I agree that it'd be great to address both of these issues, though it unfortunately may not be something that happens that soon.

                                  1. re: Dave MP

Good to hear that, Dave, thanks. But wouldn't it be fairly simple to just allow a larger pixel size (for example 1000 x 800) and leave the file size limitation the same?

                                  2. re: Malcolm Ruthven

                                    Hi Malcolm.

We released an update yesterday that now allows you to delete/add photos while editing a post.

                                  3. Is there any thought for in the future of being able to label individual pix? It's not always real easy to know what we're looking at if poster has attached several. Just a thought.

                                      A very good thought.

Have definitely given this thought and I hope to implement this sometime in the future.
