Tokyo Fried Chicken Co. - Monterey Park
i went last night. had the dinner set for 2 for $25:
2 thighs, 2 legs, 2 wings
curry creamed corn
dashi braised collard greens
the chicken was tender and flavorful, and the batter was crisp! the flavors remind me of my mom's asian/american fusion homecooking--total comfort food. she used to fry chicken marinated in soy sauce, sugar and garlic, and make braised collard greens in the same delicious way. curry creamed corn is like japanese curry sauce mixed with corn. at first, i thought the chicken rice was plain brown rice, but it was addicting on its own. the cabbage slaw provides a nice tart balance to the sweet flavors in the chicken and sides.
i'd definitely go back. we arrived around 7-ish and probably waited 45 minutes for a table. the food came out super quick though. a lot of tables were open by the time we left around 9 pm.
I went a few weeks ago.
Got the dinner for 2, w/ mac n cheese, chicken rice, yuzu (?)corn, n some beers.
I'm not a fried chicken expert so I don't know how to rate it, but the meat was tender and wasn't dry, and the skin was crunchy enough. There was already some flavor but they suggested that we use some of the sauces. Some of them (different flavors of yuzu) were too sour imo, the sweeter sauce was nice.
Sides were interesting, esp the mac n cheese, which had this "japanese-ness" to it. Corn was too sour, will get curry corn next time. Chicken rice wasn't bad but it felt mismatched to the rest of the meal. Portions aren't big, but if you've been to TOD it's about the same portion/price.
The food's good, with some questionable items, but i felt that TOD was a much more interesting concept and had a significantly larger menu.
btw the wait is just as long.
Really tasty and crispy fried chicken. 3 pieces (wing, leg, thigh) with picked ginger cabbage slaw, chicken rice (rice cooked in chicken stock), and 1 regular side for about $12.50. There are other sides you can choose from with an up charge of either $1.75 (miso ratatouille, sauteed mushrooms) and $2.50 (mac n' cheese - very good and popular). The chicken has a slight bit of sweetness from the marinate. You can pay additional to upgrade to white meat as well (they cut their breast pieces into 2 - it's really 3 pieces of chicken consisting of a wing and a breast).
Truffled Tater Tots are a good app. Off menu item, about $5.25 per order.
Get there before 6:30pm to grab 1 of the 10 tables available before a line forms. They take no reservations.
