Downhill Slide At Empress Harbor

Empress Harbor in Monterey Park doesn't get a lot of mention on this board. Still, due to its lineage descending from Harbor Village which ruled a quarter century ago, it is viewed as a step up from nearby places like NBC or Ocean Star. However in the past two weeks I've heard three separate dire reports about dinner here, with comments like "worst Chinese banquet I've ever been to" and "worst fried rice I've eaten". Not to say that the food was bad across the board, but based on the sources certainly not worth spending your money.

  1. I'll be the dissenting voice. We had a very nice dim sum there 2 weekends ago. Our guests wanted cart-style, and it was surprisingly delicious.

Don't know about the dim sum. Last time I went it was pretty good. Comments are limited to dinner service.

i would be extremely surprised to discover that the staff who make dim sum are also doing dinner.

Dim sum was fine for some of the items. About on par with Ocean Star, but with higher prices. They boast about their $1.49 or $1.79 menu, but that's only for about 5 or 7 types of dim sum, usually the less popular ones like the pork spare ribs with black bean sauce over rice noodle rolls. Frankly, I rather go to Atlantic Seafood or Ocean Star for better pricing, variety and cart service.

        2. I've always gone there for dim sum, not dinner or banquet. As a cart place, it's not bad. The food tastes fresh and not as if it's been reheated several times.

          1. Wow, worst fried rice ever eaten?!

That's got to be some pretty bad fried rice unless said diner has maybe had fried rice at only Elite, SN No 1, and SinBaLa.
