What Happened to My Old Posts?

I've been posting on Chowhound since the year 2000, when I registered using my own name, George Lynch. Sometime around 2006 (IIRC) I was forced to re-register because of the significant changes that occurred then with Chowhound. At that time I re-registered using the name Brookboy, not realizing the ramifications until some weeks or months later.

When I sent an inquiry then (in 2007) to see if there were some way I could be known by both names (George Lynch and Brookboy) I was told that no, there wasn't any way at that time, that the only thing I could do would be to re-register again, this time going back to my original name of George Lynch. Of course, by then I had already created a number of posts that I didn't want to lose, so I decided to just continue as Brookboy. One of the main reasons I decided to do that was because if I did a search on George Lynch I would see the hundreds of posts I contributed to using that name.

Now, though, when I search on George Lynch, I only get 19 hits, some of which go all the way back to 2001, most of which don't (obviously).

So my question is, what happened to my old posts under the name George Lynch? Whatever happened must be fairly recent, because the last time I searched when all the posts were there was maybe three months ago.

I'd really like to be able to have access to all those old posts if only for the sake of reminiscing.

  1. Prior to 2006, we didn't actually have registration at all; you just typed in your username each time you made a post, so they aren't really joined together under a single account the way your new posts are.

I did a quick search using 'george lynch' in the username field and 'a' as the search term (since it's likely to occur in many) and found 293 results.!q=a&am...

If you just search 'george lynch' in the search box, you'll only get posts where your username is mentioned in the body of the post, rather than posts made by that user.

I also tried searching using Google, and found 411 results:

Wow, I'm really glad I asked. For one thing, I didn't know how to do the search function correctly. It has really changed since the last time I tried it. I was just plugging in 'George Lynch' as the search term, didn't realize that selecting discussions would open an option to mention a username.

Moreover, I would never have figured out that trick of using an 'a' for the search term. After I read your reply I tried using 'George Lynch' and got about six hits. I tried using a 'g' and got maybe 30 hits. I tried using no search term at all, but that doesn't work.

Your approach yielded the best results, so I thank you kindly. I'm glad that these old posts weren't just discarded. I think some of them have real nostalgia value (thinking here of 9/11 and its aftermath, among other things).

Interesting search results on Google. Thanks for that as well.

      Thanks again,
      George Lynch
