Kuala Lumpur - Foodtique by Four Seasons (Roast Duck), Bangsar
It's finally opened in Bangsar 4 days ago - Foodtique by the Four Seasons roast duck restaurant group from London. Very spartan decor and located right next door to the hyper-popular Sri Nirwana Maju (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/809420) on one side, and a branch of the popular Seoul-based Korean bakery chain, Tous Les Jour, on the other.
What we tried:
- Four Season's famous roast duck. The duck (local Malaysian?) was bony and lacked the rich texture of the roast duck back in London, or even at its Bangkok branch (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/832516). Not impressed.
- Dark-sauced wanton noodles, with Napa cabbage. The noodles were tossed in dark-soy and sesame dressing to cater to KL-Cantonese tastes (rather than for a HK palate) - good move. It was tasty and the texture was delightful.
- Wanton dumplings in soup, with Napa cabbage. The plump shrimp-filled wanton dumplings were a delight. The soup, though, was served borderline-cold - heresy for the Chinese diner, and especially a Cantonese one.
- Stir-fried bittergourd with salted duck's egg yolk: very flavoursome, with the richness and slight saltinese of the salted duck's egg yolk adding a depth of flavour to bittergourd/
- Mapo tofu: cooked using minced chicken-meat (instead of pork) in order to cater to Muslim clientele. It's also extremely difficult in Malaysia to get a license to serve pork. The resultant dish was pretty one-dimensional. Also served lukewarm to cold.
Overall, pretty disappointed. Maybe it's teething problems still for this 4-day-old spot. Not planning to return anytime soon.
