Pete Wells of NY Times weighs in against tipping

"Let’s leave it at this: it is irrational, outdated, ineffective, confusing, prone to abuse and sometimes discriminatory. The people who take care of us in restaurants deserve a better system, and so do we. "

  1. I would welcome a change but don't expect it. And I don't expect a higher tip to buy me better service. The tip is what it is, 20% or a bit more. The service is what it is, good, bad or indifferent. I can then decide whether to return.
