Donuts in Detroit area/Michigan
I don't believe those types of donuts have really caught on here yet. (IMHO they are rather overwrought and pricey.)
Zingermans in Ann Arbor does do bacon donuts, possibly only on weekends though. Their bakehouse website should have info. You also might find some sort of funky iteration at some of the more au courant restos around Detroit, who are perhaps doing them for weekend brunch?
It's hard to improve on the simple but delicious doughnuts around here, especially around the upcoming cider season.
Crust in Fenton makes some unusual donuts from time to time. Their donut of the month for September is an apple kritter kronut, described as flaky croissant pastry blended with housemade apple pie filling. I haven't tried one yet myself. For National Donut Day in June they brought back a bunch of their donuts-of-the-month flavors:
Peanut Butter & Jelly
They also have a Facebook page.
Hope that helps.
Try the paczki with the canoli filling at Tringali's in Warren. It's the best donut I have ever eaten in my life.
I'm lookin forward to my annual donut at the Dexter Cider Mill. Additionally the drive to Chicago is nicely punctuated with a stop at Sweetwater's Donuts (Battle Creek).
