Does anyone know of any really good donut shops in michigan? Not traditional style but along the lines of Voodoo donut or Fractured Prune if your familiar with those kinds.

  1. I don't believe those types of donuts have really caught on here yet. (IMHO they are rather overwrought and pricey.)

Zingermans in Ann Arbor does do bacon donuts, possibly only on weekends though. Their bakehouse website should have info. You also might find some sort of funky iteration at some of the more au courant restos around Detroit, who are perhaps doing them for weekend brunch?

It's hard to improve on the simple but delicious doughnuts around here, especially around the upcoming cider season.

Agreed, and I hope they don't. Not everything needs to be needlessly "blinged out". Leave my poor doughnut alone!

if ya haven't had a donut plant donut from NYC, you're missing out...its not just a breakfast food, its like a dessert to go. kinda like fancied up cupcakes ...
but nobody in the dtw area offers innovative desserts, not just donuts, so its not all that surprising

      2. Crust in Fenton makes some unusual donuts from time to time. Their donut of the month for September is an apple kritter kronut, described as flaky croissant pastry blended with housemade apple pie filling. I haven't tried one yet myself. For National Donut Day in June they brought back a bunch of their donuts-of-the-month flavors:

        Nutty
        Coconut
        Maple Bacon
        Margarita
        Peanut Butter & Jelly
        Lemon-Filled
        Salted Caramel
        Brioche Glazed
        Sour Cream

They also have a Facebook page.

        Hope that helps.

I agree a normal donut is great but every now and then you like something different.

And yes I've been to crust many times and their donuts are pretty good, along with everything else they make there.

        2. Try the paczki with the canoli filling at Tringali's in Warren. It's the best donut I have ever eaten in my life.

          1. I'm lookin forward to my annual donut at the Dexter Cider Mill. Additionally the drive to Chicago is nicely punctuated with a stop at Sweetwater's Donuts (Battle Creek).
