Last Minute Trip
Sorry as I am sure there are good posts to assist, but I'm struggling to find them and bingo on time. Chicagohounds found a last minute flight deal...
Just booked a trip to DC for this weekend. I need a few suggestions for my family including a 9 year old who is quite used to dining out, well behaved and sometimes adventurous i.e. no Chuck-e-Cheese.
Saturday lunch ideas near the National Mall
Saturday dinner ideas - willing to Metro within reason from JW Marriott ideally cocktails and worth dressing up a little wife wants to wear fun dress and uncomfortable shoes
Sunday love a good breakfasty brunch
Open to ideas for dinner pretty much anywhere without car, metro or cab
Monday I have no idea what will be open, but the Spy Museum and Jaleo if open might be in the plan - other thoughts welcome....
Thanks to any and all in advance
UPDATE: Thanks to all!
Sat. Dim Sum Brunch at The Source - was quite nice. Outstanding service and food familiar enough to keep my dim sum addicted daughter happy and upscaled enough to keep it interesting and fun.
We had a very long dinner at Central - partially due to our dining style and certainly extended by a server who spent most of his time elsewhere, not completely neglected but not the favorites for sure. Good food. Short-rib was great. Desserts took the prize.
Brunch at Tabard Inn was also great - loved the old building and the food was spot on.
Dinner at Dino disappointed. They had a very large party that I think threw them into turmoil and the service was very good with apologies a free app and a gift card (a little over the top as we never complained). However, the food really didn't wow us at all. Everything was ok, but missing something to make it great.
Jaleo was really good. Wish we had more people to try more things.
Thanks again for great suggestions as always!
Zaytina is a good choice for food-friendly kids near the Spy Museum. With all those small plates, you can get a selection and your 9 year-old can try everything and perhaps get their own plate of the one he/she really loves. The same goes for Jaleo.
Our restaurants are all kid-friendly if you dine early. My daughter loved Corduroy and the front room at Palena.
Saturday Lunch: Luke's Lobster, Teaism, Jaleo (depending on what part of the mall you are at) there are also some places just past the capitol on the hill.
Saturday Dinner- are you going with your 9 year old? Some would be good regardless (Dino, Kapnos, Casa Luca, maybe CityZen, Ris, Zaytinya) some probably better w/o (Proof, Fiola, The Source, Mintwood Place, Rasika)
Sunday Brunch- Brasserie Beck, Ted's Bulletin, Dino, Woodward Table, District Common
Jaleo is good, there are tons of options in that area too.
I know people say it has gone downhill a bit, but I would go to the Mitsitam Cafe in the American Museum of the National Indian for your lunch near the mall. Foods from all over the Americas. The trick is to go EARLY to avoid the lines. Grab a tray and wander around to the various stations to decide what you want. Avoid the absolutely dreadful Sculpture Garden Cafe, except for a place to have a cool drink and people watch. It is quite pleasant for that but NOT for food.
Because it is a long weekend, you might be able to snag a table (maybe there will be a cancellation) for the best brunch in town: Tabard Inn. Phenomenal. Be sure to get the house-made doughnuts.
Please do not ruin date night with your wife by taking our dreadful, dirty, unreliable Metro. Taxis are pretty cheap here.
Among the places I would recommend without having an inkling what kind of food you like: Rasika (see recent NYT article on Ashok Bajaj), Central (Michel Richard), Oceannaire Seafood Room, Oval Room, or Marcel's. Or CitiZen.
On Monday, you might enjoy the Newseum and then go to the Source which always gets good write-ups. Avoid the Capital Grille which is really mediocre. Much better places if you want a good hunk o'beef.
Have fun! I just had a great week in Chi-town. I hope DC will reciprocate though the weather this weekend won't be as nice as it was when I was out there two weeks ago.
