new Chowfind Under the Table in Cabbagetown

Want to highly recommend a great new restaurant on Parliament St. just south of Wellesley on the west side. Six of us ate there 2 days ago(including a six year and three year old) and enjoyed the food and the restaurant atmosphere greatly.

Adult orders were Ackee and salt fish with Rice and Peas, Meatloaf and Oxtails. Kids had burgers with fries. First of all the owner Kim is so attentive and ready to find a way to make you comfortable and your meal a memorable one. All the entrees were excellent. The ackee and salt fish was wonderful, just the right balance between the slightly creamy texture of the fish and the slight crunch of the peas and rice. The meatloaf was amazing, moist and tender, the standout in my opinion. The oxtails were also great, wonderful flavour.

The kids burgers were just the right size and perfectly done with the best fries I have tasted for a long time. Kids meal prices too.

I was told about the restaurant by a friend who buys their takeout Spaghetti Bolognese and can't get enough of it.

A great meal with excellent food, surprisingly homey atmosphere and was enjoyed by all-especially the two kids!

Can't do better than that I think. Try Under the Table, you'll be glad you did.

  1. Three of us went back again today for lunch. Shaved beef sandwich with Red Pea soup was the so economical special and two of us shared an avocado, chicken, and b.l.t. sandwich with the same wonderful fries. Gotta love this place. We took out two orders of Spaghetti Bolognese for dinner and just finished it for supper. This was so amazingly good - wonderful pasta and the sauce was pure heaven. Thank goodness this place is in our neighbourhood as we can hardly wait to go back.

    1. We were on Parliament at lunchtime today and, after perusing the brunch menu, decided to give Under the Table (just south of Wellesley on the west side) a try. We had a fabulous meal. One of us had the fried chicken waffles with bacon and maple bacon Dijon sauce (you can also get it with berry sauce); the other had the soft scrambled eggs with Stilton, chives and caramelized onions, which comes with salad or home fries and toast.

      Both plates were enormous and both were delicious. The waffles were crisp and were topped with a huge portion of very moist boneless fried chicken, which was topped with a generous portion of thick-sliced smoky bacon. The soft scramble was beautifully prepared, but you have to love blue cheese (which I do) to like it; it oozes Stilton.

      It's a very small, casual place and were were lucky to get the last table at around 12:30. A couple of tables had "reserved" signs on them when we arrived. So nice to see a restaurant that takes reservations for brunch. Service is friendly and efficient.

      Looking forward to going back for dinner; a good portion of the menu features Jamaican food.
