Kuala Lumpur - Steamed Tilapia at Lucky Coffee Shop, Section 17 Petaling Jaya
All this talk about the "evils" of tilapia on another thread (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/914488) actually made me *want* to go out and try the fish this evening.
Lucky Coffee Shop is a typical Chinese-Malaysian eatery - a traditional spot where patrons come for their morning cuppa and a slice of toast smeared with margarine and "kaya" (local pandan-scented egg jam). In the evenings, a "dai chow" (cooked food) stall takes over, offering "home-cooked" dishes. We tried the stall's trademark steamed tilapia, choosing the version covered with minced ginger. Unfortunately, I found the version here to be the blandest I'd ever had in KL for the past 2 years since I was first introduced to the dish (never had this in Singapore, ever). The fish was very fresh, though.
The braised Hakka-style pork with "nam yue" (fermented beancurd) was also disappointingly bland here.
The wok-fried "yau mak" (baby Romaine lettuce) with garlic fared much better.
