Central Avenue Updates - Scarsdale/White Plains

So, looks like former Morton Williams/Turco's location will become a Mrs. Greens. Ugh - not a fan.

Also, down the road the former sushi location next to Zaza/Rustico will now be "D&A Smokehouse" bbq - could be good. We shall see.

  1. Ugh to Mrs. Greens.

Why ugh? It's in the center whose parking lot adjoins H-Mart, and right down the road from Trader Joe's.

Seems to me that Mrs. Green's complements those places, offering different items.

Is there still a Mrs. Greens well south of there, in the shopping center with the other Asian food market (Golden Dragon? some other name?)?

      1. re: Elisa515

Ugh is I was hoping for a Fairway. I have not one but 2 Mrs. Greens within 10 minutes of where I live.

        1. re: wincountrygirl

We in the northern river towns have trouble sympathizing :) --especially with Zeytinia apparently imploding, or maybe it's already closed.

Fairway would have been nice, though, you're right. I bet the amount of space would have worked, too.

          1. re: Elisa515

No way that store would have been big enough for a Fairway. Fairway is opening 65,000 square foot stores these days. I think that's bigger than H Mart, which is only 37,000 square feet.

        2. re: Elisa515

Mrs. Green's is south of there, but I bet it will close when the new location opens.

          1. re: Elisa515

No kidding, there's an H-mart on Central now?

Also, did I hear correctly that the most profitable CPK is the Scarsdale one?

Lastly, I was disappointed (just a little bit, 'tis all) to learn that the Nathan's was knocked down. What's happening in its place?

Nathans is going to be a CVS superstore with a Nathans franchise inside.

              1. re: BuildingMyBento

Not sure what a CPK is.

Yes, H-Mart is in the space formerly occupied by Pathmark, in the shopping center just north of the one with Trader Joe's, just south of the former Turco's/Morton Williams.

                1. re: Elisa515

                  California Pizza Kitchen.

Most profitable CPK is at the Waterfront in Marina dey Rey.

          2. unlikely to get a "real" bbq place in that location, i would think, still, one can hope

              Here is the website: http://dnasmokehousebbq.com/

            2. As for that smokehouse/bbq. I don't have any hope at all. Not a single mention of a smoker or a single photo of one. Not any mention of real 'cue at all. Only a grill. (sigh)

I am aso ugh for Mrs. Greens. Also not a fan, and there is one on Rt 22 in Scarsdale/Eastchester and the one next to Golden Shopping Center a mile or so south, unless it closes.

Fairway would have been nice. Wegman's would have been a dream come true.

I would have given just about anything for Wegmans!

                1. re: scarsdalesurprise

There is going to be a Wegmans opening in Montvale, NJ, which is just over the border from Rockland.

                  http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/900399

Not Westchester, but a lot closer than what we have now. And you can shop at Fairway in Paramus or (as of tomorrow) Nanuet while you're over there.

                2. re: JMF

I've never been in Wegman's but based on everyone's comments I'd love one. I am not enthused at all about Mrs. Greens. The only thing I get there - the Muir Glen tomatoes are usually cheaper there than in the supermarket. And if I need vitamins! Otherwise, from the two near me - the produce is not very good and its very expensive.

                  1. re: wincountrygirl

And I find that Mrs. Green's has that weird health food store vitamin smell, which I find repulsive.

                    1. re: roxlet

I know - I can smell it now. Not good.

                      1. re: roxlet

                        Exactly!

                        1. re: roxlet

So totally agree! I'm veg and I can barely stand to walk into Mrs G's. I hate the Whole Foods' parking lot (White Plains) but at least WF doesn't have that objectionable stench.

                          1. re: mrsdebdav

WF is opening in Port Chester on October 22nd! No more having to deal with the WP parking lot!!!

                        2. re: wincountrygirl

A Wegman's is huge. Probably as big as Stew's or Costco. No place for them with current zoning. Maybe one day when the 5,000,000 sq. ft. of vacant, obsolete office parks are rezoned. I am not sure we need a huge supermarket around here. No one wants to hear it but we need some modern gas stations and auto dealership facilities.

                        3. re: JMF

Look at their menu... it mentions a Cookshack smoker. I know them... electric commercial smoker which uses a small amount of wood, in a box surrounding the heat element. Can be OK, but not the same as real wood-smoked product... I have used both: I had a home model cookshack and got rid of it after a few years... moved on! They have a narrow menu, and it is possible to produce a good meal, depending on many factors...

                          1. re: woodburner

That menu and info is completely new since I last checked it out. There was no mention of the menu, smoker, or "15 hour brisket." The website must be brand new and they are still building it. I'm now a bit more curious.

I haven't used a Cookshack. I have a Bradley for home use and small events that I like. I've had pure wood smokers of all types, but not doing it pro anymore.

                            1. re: JMF

What's funny is that the site, I think it was a cleaner's? They remodeled and a guy did BBQ... someone connected me to him. I wanted to do authentic/wood/quality, and he wanted to do something quicker/commercial, and he did, and he went out pretty quick.. then it was Japanese... now BBQ again. We'll see.

Has anyone tried the BBQ at Four Corners in Hartsdale? Been there maybe a year or so? Looks depressing...

                              1. re: woodburner

I've glanced at it, but as you say, it looks depressing. I know I should have stopped in since I am at the Japanese market a few doors down quite often, but there is no sign or smell of smoke.

                                1. re: JMF

I just looked at the website again, and they say they will be using mesquite to smoke with. Definitely not traditional, real BBQ. Mesquite is traditionally used for grilling because it burns so hot. To hot for low and slow real BBQ, plus it is too overpowering. I wonder if they are even going to open though since there doesn't seem to be any news.

                                  1. re: JMF

I take out bar be que chicken frequently. Sometimes ribs. I think it is very good. I am not a barbeque expert but for us it is good takeout.

                                    1. re: Barrels41

Have you gotten food from this place? When did the open?

                            2. re: JMF

From what I've heard, you can't get a smoker license in Westchester.

                              1. re: traceyk

Traceyk, there have been several BBQ places over the years in Westchester that have smokers. There was a place in North White Plains, another in Valhalla, etc. Each town makes their own zoning laws, so it isn't a Westchester thing. I've never heard of a "smoker license" if you have any information about that, a source for a Westchester "license", I would love to hear.

                                1. re: JMF

Hi JMF. The county does license restaurants, however. It's not so much a smoking license, as overall resto. Now, if neighbors complain about smoke, then I think the county can require a precipitator, or change of equipment. Yeah, that Valhalla place had a J&R LIttle Red Smokehouse, which was all wood. But almost all places up here use a commercial combo, either gas/elect with some wood. Lots of Southern Prides, Ole Hickorys, etc. I like to use mesquite in small amounts with beef. And I believe what I'm doing with my briskets still qualifies as real BBQ. ;-)

                                  1. re: woodburner

The key word is small amounts of mesquite. This restaurant says that's all they will use. They also say 15 hour smoked brisket. Can you imagine 15 hours of mesquite? I don't even like to think of that.

Sure, the county license's restaurants. But I never heard of a smoker license.

(With a name like woodburner I am sure you are doing ral BBQ.)

                                    1. re: JMF

Very acrid. Not good for long smoking at all. Hickory, cherry, oak, any hardwood really, according to my DH who is the Pitmaster.

                                      1. re: JMF

Yep. Agree. I think they mean all they use is mesquite, in the small amounts that go in the gas pit! And while no smoker license, I think the health dept can still jerk you around about the smoker...

                                        1. re: woodburner

Looks like they may be open. I just drove by and while they had paper on the windows, they also had the new sign up and an "open" Sign up as well.

Supposedly Mrs Green's now sells Ta'iam hummous (the place in Hastings). Used to get that stuff at the Bronxville Farmer's Market. It's the best tasting premade hummous I have ever had and I have tried a lot of them. That would be a reason for me to go there if it is true and they manage to keep it in stock.

funny story- my first mini cooper- back in 2002 had a license plate surround for inn-n-out, ppl. were often asking questions, when i stopped-they were very rare in those days, one time a guy had me roll down the window- he shouted out "do you like yours animal style?- light changed and i drove off, wondering what he was talking about, weeks later i noticed my bracket, and realized what he meant.

Tough with Smashburger opening on Tarrytown Rd. Jake's Wayback Burgers next to Verizon is a bust. Chipotle would have been a home run. You have to be the top dog in your niche today. Wallets are tight and the customer is fussy.

                                        3. The new owners of Mrs. Green's want to be more like Whole Foods and less granola and Birkenstocks. They also leased the closed Gourmet on Broadway in Tarrytown.

It's a tough niche for that location because all the aggressive supermarkets are selling organics. Also the local area in Hartsdale is mixed income and the local upper middle to higher income customers are "old school".

Briarcliff store is beautifully renovated. Lots more products; I didn't do a thorough look around, but the produce looked great and there was much more variety.

I agree the Briarcliff store looks nice, but it seems like there's more "packaged" stuff and less "bulk" (i.e. inexpensive) stuff. I forget what I was looking for; I just remembered when I found it, it was much more expensive than it used to be.

                                                    1. re: DGresh

Agree! No more wonderful bulk nuts, etc. And the packaged stuff is now commercial (as opposed to cooked by "Chef Mark") and almost double the price it used to be. Actually, many of their prices make Whole Foods seem reasonable! And although I agree the renovation is nice, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the organization, with randomly displayed goods. My dog (whose favorited biscuits are no longer stocked there) and I are not impressed.

Different than Whole Foods in that there isn't the depth of prepared foods, which is fine with me as this isn't my area of interest.

Yes, I stopped in today when I was at HMart. Really nice store with friendly employees all over the place. It reminded me visually of the Fresh Market in Eastchester. It does not appear that they've closed the one further down Central Avenue. Does anyone know if they're planning to? Certainly a major step up from their other stores!

                                              2. Speaking of the Scarsdale area, does anyone know anything about Petra on Garth Rd? We've been looking forward to having Greek food in the neighborhood for quite a few months now.

Also, I have noticed there is work being done on the former Spiga site, so maybe Ben's Deli will open in the

It also looks as if Cafe Azzuri near Hartsdale Ave closed.

Thank goodness. Azzuri had the worst service I ever encountered in Westchester.

Lol. I had a meal at the bar over the summer, and it was actually pretty good.

That corner is tough - not much parking available.

                                                            The lot is tight, too.

I didn't mind the food. It was fine, even good at times. I did mind the morons they hired as hosts, waiters, and bussers.

A conversation my husband had with a waiter there comes to mind. He ordered a steak sandwich at a pre-paid, celebratory luncheon with a set menu. He was brought a hamburger. There were other people at our table with steak sandwiches.

My husband said, "This isn't a steak sandwich."
                                                            Waiter said, "Yes it is."
                                                            "No it isn't. It's a hamburger."
                                                            "It is chopped steak, sir."
"I didn't order chopped steak, I ordered a steak sandwich."

This went on for 10 minutes. It wasn't even the most egregious error that occurred at that restaurant but it was the funniest, especially when the other people with steak sandwiches at the table held them up and waved them around for the waiter to see.

                                                            1. re: foodiemom10583

He should have asked what item the people who had the actual steak sandwiches received. Pretty funny that the servers were such a**holes (well I guess if it happened to you it wouldn't be funny).

                                                  2. Has anyone heard of any plans for the former Chef Central site? I just took a spin up to White Plains and checked out Chef Central's temporary location. Don't go if you're claustrophobic!

Roxlet - you are right about the new CC - very crowded!

My kids did several week long camps and learned so much. The new Chef Central will not have any cooking facilities in the permanent location and will not be offering the camps or classes any more. I have no reason to go there any more.

I just assumed that they wanted to expand into a bigger, more commodious space when they changed locations. I will be a much more infrequent visitor to their store since it's now further from my home, and if I need something right away, I can always go to the Sur La Table in Ridge Hill, which is a lot closer.

                                                                        1. re: roxlet

The Crossroads center they moved to is being modernized and leased to new tenants like DSW and Pet Smart. Some hard goods stores are taking less retail space as their on-line sales increase.

                                                                          1. re: Barrels41

Their business model seemed to be all about getting people into the store via events and classes. The other store, in Paramus, has been increasing its events in fact. I get emails from them - they just had a chef competition last week. I don't see how this Westchester store is going to make it just as a plain old retail store - it is easier for most of us to order the gear from Amazon

I think it will go the way of Gourmet Garage and Morton Williams. They opened a store for granola millionaires in an eggplant Parmesan location.

Maybe we passed each other in one of those locations -- visited the same places. I went into Mrs G's because I knew they carried some very good breads, but ended up also buying some produce because they looked good and were no more expensive than elsewhere. I thought maybe they were moderating some prices to attract more customers since this is a big store to keep going otherwise. But, yes, a lot of their food is just more expensive than I care to shell out. I happen to be feeding three generations of family these days, with many different tastes and requirements, and I spend a lot of time in a lot of different markets trying to meet most of these needs, making some compromises on costs just to keep the number of market visits within some reasonable parameters, but not a roast for $34/lb.

                                                                                        2. I picked up takeout from the new chicken place just north of Hartsdale Ave. on Central Ave. Not the night to go to that area, stuck in traffic for half an hour after I got my takeout because of a power outage in Hartsdale. The chicken was still hot when I got home and very good. The owner is Puerto Rican but says that the chicken is Peruvian. I don't want to compare it to the good Peruvian places in Port Chester but, I liked the food. Sides were luke warm for me but, very tasty rice and the beans are fantastic. My one complaint, and its a big one, is the portion size. I paid $22+ for a family chicken meal and got one whole chicken about 3 pounds (that was fine) and three sides that were tiny. I had to pull some leftover veggies and rice out of the fridge to round out the meal for my wife and 2 kids. Billed as "Large Sides" they should be 3x the size.

I went there tonight and tried their spicy chicken with mashed potato and fried plantain as sides. Chicken was nice and juicy. It wasn't too spicy. I'll definitely return. Now I don't have to trek all the way to Port Chester every time I want good rotisserie chicken.

The place is called Braza Roja (www.brazaroja.com).

We've called and stopped by in person. There is a sign on the door that says they are closed on Monday, but that's it. Does anyone know what's up?
