Bottarga in Vancouver? / alternative to it?

I know this is an old topic from 2-3 years ago, but am wondering if anyones had success finding a source of bottarga that's slightly cheaper? At 60$ a pop it's quite hefty, ideas?

Also, has anyone had success making it from scratch with roe on this side of the world? I tried making it with sockeye roe and lingcod roe, not sure if real bottarga is suppose to taste like what I made ....

  1. Grotta Del Formaggio? I vaguely recall seeing them mentioned in association with Bottarga. Haven't been there for eons so can't confim.

      We brought bottarga back from Sicily for foodie friends in Vancouver in 2007, so I'd be interested to know if it can now be had here locally.
