Austin Chronicle Restaurant Poll

rudeboy May 23, 2004 01:31 PM

Mirabelle won first place. I've never been there - is it that good?

There were some questionable restaurants on the list of the top 20 (Coco's Cafe, Hill Country Pasta House?). Can this poll be trusted, or are some of the restaurants just entering their own submissions?

Sure seems like a case of stuffing the ballot box to me...Mirabelle is good, but it sure as heck isn't the best restaurant in Austin. I would choose Wink, Castle Hill or Eastside Cafe over Mirabelle any day.

Personally, I put a lot more faith in the critic's selections over the reader's.

Exactly, like the music poll, the Chronicle seems to allow ballot-box stuffing. So, I usually don't even glance at the reader's picks. The critics, however, are usually dead on.

I don't know how legit the poll is, but I think Mirabelle is really good. I've been a number of times and the only thing I've had there I thought was bad is the shrimp bisque, that has been awhile back, so it may be better now. It's owned by the same people that own Castle Hill Cafe.

True, the same people who run castle hill own it, but they are very different when it comes to flavor. While Castle Hill has very intense sauces and flavors, Maribelle is bland in comparison (almost geriatric, imho)
